Nurse Practitioner Education

Lucy Said:

What kind of education is needed in order to become a OB/GYN Nurse Practitioner?

We Answered:

Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing followed by at least 1-2 years practice as a nurse, then you get into a Nurse Practitioner program which is another 2 years. Essentially a Master's degree. The other persons answer about Medical school is completely wrong.

Gwendolyn Said:

How much education do you need to be a nurse practitioner?

We Answered:

first you need to have your BSN (Bachelor of Science, Nursing) which can vary widely (depends on the program and if you have any prior credits, etc).

Then the NP program is a Master's program, generally about 18-24 months, sometimes straight through without breaks.

Rosemary Said:

What are the education requirements to become a nurse practitioner? What exactly do they do?

We Answered:

You will need a master's degree. They are sort of like Doctors. They can run their own businesses. In some places they can prescribe medications.

Felix Said:

What are the education requirements to become a nurse practitioner? Do they need to intern like doctors?

We Answered:

An NP has a masters in the field. They do what are termed CLINICALS where they gain practical experience during their education program.

A NP in MOST states can now work in an independent practice- not under control of a physician.
