Online Degrees In Education

Sylvia Said:

When Do You Think Online Degrees Will Finally Be Accepted By Professionals As Legitimate?

We Answered:

That thinking is outdated. Many professionals now take courses online to further their careers while they work. Soldiers who are stationed overseas are prime examples of online students . If you choose an school that is legitimate and has accreditation, the degree should be accepted without a blink of an eye. There are many state universities that offer these types of undergrad and grad degrees right along side their "regular" degrees in their catalogs. There is nothing on the diploma or on the transcript that says the classes were taken non-traditionally!

I got my BS in Information Systems Management (magna *** laude) from the University of MD. I also have an Associates from a local community college. No one has ever asked me if the degrees were obtained online or not . Only a handful of my classes were 'traditional' with a majority of classes done online and a few by TV (which was not a good experience for me). It is actually harder to take classes online because you do not have the direct support of classmates and the professor. A few of my professors were thousands of miles away. I found it challenging and rewarding because it made me resourceful though.

Do your homework before signing on with any school. Good luck! I am going for my master's next fall and plan not to take a single step in a classroom!

Online degrees?

How about an MEd from Cal State? http://www.ce.csueastbay.edu/courses/dis…

The best school to get an online degree from is also the best school to get a traditional degree from. Thing is, those are often really expensive and teachers don't make all that much compared to the investment.

Degrees are evaluated by the reputation of the school that awarded them. If the school you pick has a solid reputation, then your degree will have a solid reputation (online or not). In fact, the diploma says nothing about online/classroom/mixed on it.

I like UMass (http://www.umassonline.net/Home.html ) for their reputation but I have some friends who are k-12 teachers that are very fond of Peru State College in Nebraska (http://www.peru.edu ) because they are very well priced.

Some of the best buys in education master's degrees are list at geteducated.com http://www.geteducated.com/rankings/best…

A caution; if you're not going to value your choice to do the degree online - if you question the validity of your degree - then you won't be happy with it. Either clarify for yourself the validity or stick with "old school".

Boston University is offering their Master of Music and Doctor of Music degrees in music education wholly online. If Boston U. thinks it's a viable option - I don't pretend to know more than they do. Harvard, Oxford, UC-Berkeley, Stanford, Duke, Johns-Hopkins, etc... all are teaching online. That says something.
