Physical Education Teacher

Josephine Said:

How do I become a Physical Education teacher?

We Answered:

Depends on what state you're in. Since you already have a degree, it sounds like you need to be "subject matter competent"- which means taking certain coursework in PE/Kinesiology.

Here in California, all you need to do is pass a subject matter test in P.E. I teach health, though my BA was in Family and Consumer Sciences. I took the test, passed, and tada- became eligible to teach Health.

You also need to do a credentialing program. Here in CA, you can do what they call a "district internship". I taught the first two years FT like a normal teacher while completing my credential at night/weekend.

Think about getting competent in more than just PE, since you want to be employable. Health is a great option as most school link PE/Health together.

What does it take to be a Physical Education teacher at an elementary?

We Answered:

An associate's is not enough. You need your bachelor's to begin with, and you will need your master's eventually. There's no quick way around the degrees. You'll need to major in health and physical education (or something very close to that - sometimes it has slightly different names). You'll also have to pass some standardized tests before you can get your teaching certificate.

Charlotte Said:

Is there a way to be a physical education teacher without earning that specific degree?

We Answered:

It depends on your state, but it's unlikely. Each state has a list of colleges that have approved teacher certification programs in each subject area. You may be able to find it on your state's Dept of Ed website. If your college dropped the physical education certification, you will not be able to get it there.

If you know that becoming a P.E. teacher is your goal, you should switch to a college that offers that certification. You should be able take your first year of classes at this college and then transfer to another for next year without getting too far behind.

High school classes to become a physical education teacher?

We Answered:

you should take science, and ap bio (or some advanced biology or anatomy class) is highly recommended. it will help you out big time in college.
you should also log onto the school websites for colleges you might go to and take a look at their curriculum for a phys ed major. try and take a well rounded number of classes that relate to the classes you'll be taking in college.
