Right To Education

Geraldine Said:

Can a person with the right education start as a Aviation mechanic and work his way up to a CEO position?

We Answered:

Possible? Yes. Likely? No. However, as an example, Larry Risley of Mesa Airlines (he's dead now) did exactly that. Started as a mechanic, eventually formed his own "air taxi" company with two 6-seat airplanes and grew his business into the second largest regional airline in the USA. He died a multi-millionaire. A lot of people also hated his guts.

do i need to be a licensed beer maker with the right education to make and sell beer in Canada?

We Answered:

Yes

Jessie Said:

what is the right education to get a job in private equity and venture capital ?

We Answered:

Hi,

If you mean which degree, the majority of private equity professionals have an MBA (Masters of Business Administration). An MBA is not a requirement but it is pretty standard for applicants to have achieved an MBA from a reputable business school.

If you mean which school is good for private equity and venture capital there are of course the ivy league universities that have great programs relevant to private equity, also I would check out the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth which has a pretty established center for private equity and entrepreneurship.

Viola Said:

Am I taking the right education path?

We Answered:

I don't think it matters a great deal which of those two courses of action you pursue, so use your own judgement on that. What I would say though is to try your best to make sure your eventual degree is not too narrow, not too focused on very specific technical and business subjects. The more breadth you can have, the more general economics and indeed courses beyond that (humanities, a language) the better that will serve you for the MBA and in the work world.

Good luck.

Dennis Said:

Go for masters in education right after undergrad or apply for teaching job and get masters while I teach?

We Answered:

Often, a masters with no experience is not any better for getting a job than a bachelors alone. But it really depends on where you live. If you can find a job, I'd try to teach at least one year before you start your masters program, to have some experience under your belt. Or do your masters in the summer (many schools have this option.) If you can't find a job right away, its a good time to start on your masters.
