Early Childhood Special Education Degree? We Answered:
Dual Early Childhood Education means you can teach General (without an IEP or ISFP) AND Special Ed (with an IEP or ISFP), age 3 (PreK) to grade 3. You can teach students that are LD, CD, or EBD, or any combination.Stephanie Said:
What other careers , besides teaching , can I get with a Masters Degree in Special Education? We Answered:
I cant believe that. There are always jobs in special ed. Are you willing to relocate? Our school system was having trouble finding a spec ed. Teacher. I know some schools are cutting positions due to funding. There are alot of jobs you qualify for though. Most social service jobs (caseworker in afdc or fs, head start administrator,) hospital entry level, mental health care, look on your county website they are often hiring in WIC or juvenile center, you can look online and study for the probation officer test and take it-pay and benefits isgood, you can try corrections, you can get a business job. They will hire you for human resourses or other depts. there are alot of agencies that have group homes and such that would hire you to be a caseworker... Really you are very marketable with a ms degree. Wont your university help with jobs?
good luck.

What kind of degree is required in Michigan to teach Special Education? We Answered:
An undergraduate degree is sufficient unless you wanted to become a diagnostician (the person who tests people refered for special education enrollment). This would require a masters. The rules for becoming a teacher are fairly uniform across states. But as for specific certification (specific courses, standardized tests..etc) in your state, I'd talk with
1) the education department at the college(s) you are personally interested in. Arrange for campus visits with professors to talk with them if possible.
2) The education agency regulating k-12 schools in MI; they are responsible for issuing teacher certification
3) The education agency regulating higher education in MI; they are responsible for allowing any college or university in the state to first exist and then to offer a teacher education curriculum including for people wanting to teach special education. Unless this agency approves the teacher ed curriculum, an institution of higher ed cannot offer it.
These people would provide state-specific policies for becoming that teacher.

Who has a special education degree? We Answered:
The normal route to a special education career is first getting a liberal arts degree from an accredited college or university. Then you go on to get a teachering degree with an emphsis in special education. There is a moderate/severe focus or a mild/moderate focus. To receive a degree in special education, you have to go to school for an additional 11/2 years-2 years with interships and certain tests that vary from state to state.Another way to go is the path I took. I have a degree in social welfare. I stoppped working while raising my kids. I got part-time work as an assistant in a special education class. I decided to go back for my teaching degree in special education. In lieu of going back to my college and starting from stratch, I took a very difficult test called the MSAT. It was a general education test. I had to know a little about math, Shakespeare sonnets, and Japanese history, etc. Only about 60% of the people taking the test passed. It has nothing to do with your gift or ability to teach special ed students. They have changed the test to the CSAT I believe which is suppose to be somewhat easier.
After I passed the MSAT, I enrolled in National Univrsity, (San Diego) for all the special ed classes I needed to become a special ed teacher.
I have been teaching special education in schools for years and love it. Because of a foot problem, I only work as a substitute teacher so I teach all ages and types of children with special needs. The occupation is, however, not for everyone. You should visit a class or talk to someone who is a special ed teacher first. Learn all you can about it.
I got my credential through the state of California. Tests and requirements may vary from state to state.
Good luck!!

how much is a degree in special education worth? We Answered:
Its worth as much as the school district you can get a job at pays you. I don't know where you are from but the starting salary for Sped teacher where I am from is about $30,000 a year on the low end and the more education you get the higher you go.My wife and I have both been Special Ed teachers for 9 years , we have the exact same education (Masters), but she makes about $8,000 more than I do because her district is a higher paying district.
An associates degree is not really worth much unless you just want to be a teachers aide, because you need at least a bachelor's degree to get your teaching certificate.

How viable is a Bachelor Degree in Education (Special Education)? We Answered:
There is such a great need for Special Education teachers in the U.S. that some communities are hiring candidates who are not yet certified, and in some cases even paying for the rest of their Special Ed. education. However, in addition to being a teacher, a degree in Special Education can prepare you for a career in education policy (in which there is currently a particularly heightened need), to work in education leadership positions, or to oversee a variety of types of special education programs.
If you were to take on a second major, such as Journalism, you could possibly pursue a career as a Special Education reporter, writer, or columnist.
For Special Ed. job prospects, you might want to check out Occupational Outlook Handbook, 2008-09 Edition at http://www.bls.gov/oco/ocos070.htm . There you will find a wealth of information. For example, according to this report, "Nearly all [Special Education Teachers] work in public and private educational institutions. [In 2006,] a few worked for individual and social assistance agencies or residential facilities, or in homebound or hospital environments."
You might also check out the website of NASET (National Association of Special Education Teachers), particularly their Career Center, at http://www.naset.org/7.0.html
Best of luck to you.
