Special Education Jobs

Frank Said:

are there more special education jobs for elementary grades or early childhood?

We Answered:

It depends on what kind of work you want to do.
If you want to do one on one therapy privately it will be mixed.
If you want to work in the school district you will have more opportunities in the elementary grades.
Good Luck!

What jobs can a person major in early childhood special education do?

We Answered:

Good for you. It certainly will. In fact not everyone has a Masters in that role, so you will be at a decided advantage.

Should I go into Special Education? Are jobs really that abundant?

We Answered:

First, should you go into Special Education. Whether jobs are available or not you need to make this decision based on your experience. There has been a lot of research regarding turn over in special education you might want to look at some of it. If you have no experience with people with special needs you might want to try and volunteer in a classroom or get a job as an Aide before you make the commitment. I have two children with mild learning disabilities but I started out as a substitute teacher and tried a variety of classrooms. I have been an SDC teacher for the past 8 years and love it.

Now on to the job! There are lots of different positions, there are home school teachers who visit students who can't attend a regular school for various reason, there are RSP (Resource Specialist) who pull a few students at a time from their regular classroom or go into the regular classroom to assist, there are SDC (Special Day Class) teachers who have their own classroom but may have as few as 6-8 students depending on the age and disability and there are inclusion specialist who work with regular education teachers to differentiate their curriculum.

Good Luck!

Jobs prior to becoming a Special Education teacher?

We Answered:

Hey, special ed. teachers are SO in demand right now that prior experience isn't important as long as you have the professional credentials. I would suggest you volunteer with special ed. programs, it would look good on your resume. Some suggestions are Special Olympics, a handicapped horse-back program, many city recreation programs have activities for handicapped kids and are always looking for volunteers. If you need a paying job, try substituting for special ed. classes on days you do not have other classes. That REALLY looks good on resumes. Good luck, we need all the good people we can get!

Are there jobs for Special Education teachers in California?

We Answered:

California is having HUGE teacher layoffs this year because of their budget crisis. Even though special ed is usually one of the easiest teaching areas to find a job in, it will be tough this year to find openings in California.

There are other places in the U.S. where special ed teachers are being hired though. My friend just got several offers to teach special ed in the Washington DC area.
