Jose Said:

What types of education can you get in the military/army?

We Answered:

Most states only require a high school diploma to be a State Trooper or Policeman. That being said the majority of those applying, and thus your competition, will have at least two years of college and many will have a 4 year Bachelors degree. That is what you will need to be competitive. In addition your Veterans Status will give you 5-10 extra points on the entrance exam depending on the state. You will need to take classes on your off duty time to work towards a degree.

Erica Said:

What colleges in the U.S.A. are best for psychology, and what types of education is required?

We Answered:

You may want to look at the "Insiders Guide to Graduate Programs in Clinical and Counseling Psychology" I have included a link for you below. This will tell you what colleges/universities offer psychology programs beyond the undergraduate level (Masters and Doctorate). It will also tell you which programs are accredited by the American Psychological Association (APIA). I have included a link for you below.

If you choose to major in psychology you will need at least a Masters degree to have some real employment options.
Education to get in is the same for almost any college or university if you have decent grades, decent SAT or ACT scores, and some involvement in extracurricular activities (band, drama club, math club, sports, student government, etc.) that will all serve you well.

Differences: A psychiatrist is a medical doctor (it requireds medical school) plus one to five years of internship in psychiatry (this varies by state). Their treatments (mostly not always) are based on the medical model and involve precribing medication.

A psychologist has a PhD (doctorate) in psychology, has to pass the Examination for Professional Practice in Psychology (EPPP). This treatment is usually talk therapy with people. In some states (New Mexico & Arizona) can prescribe medication after additional education and supervision under a medical doctor (usually about 3 years).
With a Masters in psychology you can test to be a Licensed Professional Counselor or a Marriage & Family Therapist. You can also take the EPPP and be a Licensed Psychological Associate but with the LPA you have to be supervised by a psychologist.
Most school counselors have degrees in school counseling or in counseling and not in psychology. This field deals mostly with school issues homework/grades/peer pressure, etc. but it can involve some family issues as well.

I have included links to the American Counseling Association, the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy and the American School Counselor Association below.
