What Is Physical Education

Reginald Said:

What is your response for colleges that require physical education as a basic?

We Answered:

My school requires a Phys Ed lecture as well as two "labs" Each lab only lasts half of a semester, but you have to take all three in the same semester. It makes scheduling important classes VERY difficult, and most of the labs they offer require you to already be in star athlete condition in order to pass.
I think it's ridiculous because, I take good care of myself without the aid of a PE class. I exercise on a regular basis, and eat fairly well considering I'm a college student. Yeah I'm not the most physically fit person in the world, but college students have better things to do than run stairs for an hour or two every other night when they could be studying for their future, making lasting friendships, or simply reading a good book. But this is all my opinion, so take it with a grain of salt... : )

Katrina Said:

Is getting a degree in physical education a good career opportunity?

We Answered:

Note that unless this is a actually a degree in Secondary ed with an emphasis in PE, you will not be allowed to teach high school PE. You'll have to go back to school and earn a teaching certificate, commonly known as a 5th year diploma. Or you can go back an earn a master's in education in teaching, which will allow you to get paid more. Be careful though, majority of school districts are not hiring much anymore..

Michelle Said:

What are the possible graduate degrees for a certified physical education teacher?

We Answered:

sports mng, exercise physiology, athletic training, kinesiology, physical therapy.
With a background in PE you should be able to get into most of these without problems.

Laura Said:

Why is physical education not important in schools anymore?

We Answered:

Because the education system has been bound to standardized test scores, and phys ed, along with art and music (whose losses are far less worthy of lamentation), is considered a sacrificial lamb.

Don Said:

What is the need and purpose for physical education?

We Answered:

Your premise is well founded in my opinion. According to one source, "The purpose of physical education is to: Involve the learner in a wide range of movement, knowledge, and skill-building experiences; Contribute to the learner's growing value system and his/her development of responsible attitudes and behavior essential to a healthy lifestyle; Promote understanding and appreciation for differences among people in physical activity settings; Develop the habit of choosing to regularly participate in physical activity as part of a health-enhancing personal fitness plan; and, Expand options for wise use of leisure time."

The same source defines "A physically educated person is one who: Has learned skills necessary to perform a variety of physical activities; Is physically fit; Participates regularly in physical activity; Knows the implications of and the benefits from involvement in physical activities;and Values physical activity and its contribution to a healthful lifestyle."

Given the aforementioned information and others like it I personally believe you are right on target with your analysis of the "need and purpose for physical education".
