Biology Articles For High School Students

High School student getting into genetics?

We Answered:

'Introducing Genetics' by Steve Jones is a must-read. This is simple, but highly informative and rather fun book discusses everything from Mendel to the Human Genome Project, with loads humor thrown in. I'd start here. I can recommend 'Principles of Genetics' by Robert Tamarin as your next step, which is a well-written college text book.

As for online resources: there are many options to be found just by using keywords such as 'genes', 'genetics', 'DNA' and 'heredity' with your favorite search engine. To start off, the Genetics Society of the UK maintains a page with some pretty good introductory info to help answer the who, what, and why of genetic research. The Behavioral Sciences Department at Palomar College also has a pretty good page on the basic principles of genetics.

Hope that helps!

Curtis Said:

For Secondary / High School Biology Teachers - do you know any good "Read Alouds"?

We Answered:

How about stories about emergency room workers? About scientists who found cures for diseases? Longer works might include biographies of scientists like Pasteur.

Myths about diseases would be interesting reading--old wives' tales that scientists have put to rest. The Snopes site with urban legends might supply interesting short pieces that you could use to introduce a class.

I'll link a sample from the Snopes site.

If this or another answer here proves helpful in your research, you can encourage good answers by choosing one answer as the "best answer."

I don't want to drop out of high school, but (long description, seriously)?

We Answered:

Well you'll have to set through the english, maths, and required subjects, but physiology, and sociology seem like they would be good for you if your school offers the subjects. Your school seems like the type that just wants to get state requirements out of the way. School does get boring for me a lot because I seem to be able to remember everything after I see it or hear the teacher say it, spanish at my school is the greatest our teacher is great, and aside from teaching well he tells stories of stuff in his very interesting life. Maybe you should look into small private school, they would probably have the curriculum and discussion you yearn for, you can probably have a campus visit to them, I do love the social part of high school to going out with friends, sport high school and competitive leagues in sports are great I play soccer year round and my club team is just such a relief to everything. I wouldn't drop out it just makes everything so difficult, just live through it, try and raise your grades so you have better college opportunities it doesn't mean you have to change your mindset.

Evolution vs. Creationism: A new weapon in the battle?

We Answered:

I don't think it's fair, but at the same time, not teaching evolution is a mistake.

Dwayne Said:

Should I stress over this?

We Answered:

No, you should not.

Because you're in college, and the ACT and SAT tests are only taken by HS students, you're in an exceptional position [you should be in no worry - unlike those who are actually sitting for the examinations in hope of doing reasonably well to remain highly competitive in college admissions- of passing college admission tests because you're already in college].

Don't think pessimistically of yourself in a cause of performing academically lower than others. Remember, there will almost always be someone of higher intelligence.

Just continue your hard work, and you should see successful results coming your way.

Betty Said:

Why do some people think that blacks are dumb?

We Answered:

People think that way about blacks because they're racist. You should work hard like always to have nice grades BUT after you FINISH the school and if you meet that slut in the street or somewhere asking you a favour, tell her that black people aren't smart enough for that, so she, as a white, should know what to do. I think she'll be ashamed.

You're no worse than the others, maybe even better because you don't seem a racist. You're not less developed (physically/mentally) and you're after all a human being. Don't let such assholes to destroy your life. Everybody gets his/her punishment - soon or later

Travis Said:

A question for atheists on...?

We Answered:

I'm not an atheist but all physical evidence supports the theory of evolution.

what other scientific theory about the development of life do you have in mind. that is based on physical evidence?.. there is none. Scientifically there is no dissenting evidence and that is why virtually the entire scientific community supports evolution theory.

"Creationism" is run on ignorance about science altogether- from dishonesty or innocent misunderstanding. the version of evolution theory and science in general circulated by creationists is far from accurate to reality.

Evolution is not a "fact", but it is as much of a "fact" as Gravity theory. In science, theories are virtually opposite of a mere assumption.
Scientific theories hold the highest merit in science as a framework of proven hypotheses that can predict future patterns, that has lasted through rigorous scrutiny in peer review. Remaining true to science, a "theory" in science does not ever claim to be a "fact" because "facts" imply it is unfalsifiable (dogma.) Plus, a theory in science embodies a scope of well-substantiated knowledge, not just one claim.

The domain of science is phenomena in the natural/physical realm... so what does "life being started by God's hands" have to do with science? It doesn't belong in science classrooms... theology is not a scientific discussion.

Science never conflicted with the concept of a Creator, and it never can, but throughout history science has often conflicted with physical phenomena religious people conjecture their God did in the physical world (like geocentrism and 6-day creationism).
Science and theism (the belief in God per se) are compatible, though, as they occupy different domains.
