Canterbury High School

Tina Said:

Any novels you had to read in high school that you actually enjoyed reading?

We Answered:

A Separate Peace was interesting but I didn't get it at the time. If I were forced to choose from this list it would be To Kill A Mockingbird. You are absolutely right about liking a book later in life because you have life experience. Canterbury Tales is a good example. Beowulf is like the emperors new clothes. Nobody likes it and it's famous because it's old. My own favorite required reading was The Awakening by Kate Chopin but the guys in my class hated it.

Maurice Said:

What is the Canterbury School in New Milford, Connecticute like?

We Answered:

I thought I would take a shot at answering your question about Canterbury School. I was a student here for 4 years and am now in my second year working here as the Assistant Director of Admission. If you are thinking about applying for the 09-10 school year I would encourage you to start the application process now. All application materials are due by January 31st. That includes all recommendations, official transcripts and test scores. I would also encourage you to fill out an inquiry online at www.cbury.org so that we can send you more information.

Okay, enough of that. Here is a little bit about Canterbury. We are a boarding and day school of 350 students grades 9-12 with anywhere from 10-20 post graduate students in any given year. We have all the fantastic academics, athletics and arts that you can expect from a prep school but with the added aspect of being driven by Catholic values and ideals. Every aspect of the school is guided by the 5 values of respect, honesty, spirituality, self-reliance, and compassion. I believe that it is these values that really set us apart from many of the other prep schools. I would have to say that it is because of these values that we have such a great community and a real familial atmosphere. Over 80% of our faculty live on campus, and many of the rest live within walking distance. Because of that it is not unusual to be getting extra help from your teachers in their home while sharing a meal with their family, or even going over to watch their kids or pets. Our faculty members will not just be your teachers, but also your coaches, advisors, mentors, and second parents. Student life on campus is always busy. We go to school 6 days a week, with half days on wednesday and saturday, and are playing sports every day after school. Sundays are your one day off, where you have the day totally to yourself, once you have gone to mass of course.

Being a student at Canterbury will give you the opportunity to work with classically trained shakespearian actors in our theatre department, learn from professional artists in our art gallery, play in one of our bands on the Sheehan terrace in front of your classmates, win the prep bowl with our football team, or travel around the world doing community service.

Overall, Canterbury is a great place to go to high school, and I encourage you to come and visit. If you have any more questions, you can reach me at amavelli@cbury.org

Edwin Said:

Did you have to memorize the prologue to The Canterbury Tales while in high school?

We Answered:

No, when I was in high school we had to memorize complete passages from William Shakespeare's MacBeth; Romeo and Juliet; A Mid-Summer Nights Dream and George Orwell's 1984.

We then had to recite them from memory in front of the class and critique each other.

Lori Said:

Wayne Said:

In high school, what was your favorite Canterbury Tale?

We Answered:

the wife, because she was a really salty old gal

Joanne Said:

what are the additions for Canterbury high school for acting like?

We Answered:

I imagine first you have to apply for the school, then if you meet the criteria, they will schedule your audition and tell you what to present.

Hilda Said:

Should the Canterbury tales be taken out of high school curriculum?

We Answered:

Why would Louisiana take it out of the curriculum? There is nothing suggestive about it as far as I'm concerned. Then again, my school's textbook only received an excerpt, so I don't know all the tales.
