Graduation is to commemorate the finishing of something big. Everyone who's gone through high school knows what a huge deal it is to get through school and earn enough credits to graduate. The walking and recognition is a big deal for parents too.
As for what to wear under your cap and gown that depends on what you're doing after wards. If you parents are going to want pictures or are going to take you to a nice dinner then I would wear something nice underneath. If you're going to a party and won't be asked to pose for graduation pictures in those clothes, then wear something you would party in.

A box of pretty cards announcing you are graduating. You send them out to every relative and friend you can and hope they send you a gift or money.

It has an elastic band that hugs your head.
But if you're a girl, be sure to take bobby pins because it will slide.

Just above the ankle should be fine...I hate it when they're too short, and you can see the hem of the clothes underneath. The sleeve should be billowy and full, and will probably seem oversized. Just make sure the sleeve isn't too long. I fooled around with my cap until I had it a way I liked (which almost always involves hairpins if you want it to stay), and then I took a digital pic to remember what I did. Just make sure it's solid for your walk to get your diploma. After you walk, you can subtly pull out the hairpins for the cap toss, or whatever. Take pics beforehand, so you look your freshest, and the cap is on. :) No one likes the cap.
