There are sooo many possibilities...The nursing homes always welcome kids to come sing,visit,make crafts with their senior citizens.You all could all volunteer to serve in a soup kitchen,,or raise money and serve free hot dogs to people in need.
We did a puppet show(puppets and stage borrowed) about child abuse for the PTA.it really was good.
You could have one for drug prevention,and have the crime dog or whatever there too.Get Someone who has been a drug addict come and talk about how to stay away..have self help pamphlets on hand to hand out..
You can just have an old fashion softball,basketball,etc...game and raise money and give it to a charity in the community,,food bank, homeless,,,etc...
We built a playhouse and painted it and put real windows in it with window boxes and raffled it off for $2 a person....and then after we had raised $1000dollars,we drew a winning name and they won the playhouse..they had to come pick it up.We gave the money to our local blue Santa,who gives toys to kids at Christmas time...really great!

There are two types of help. Physical service and emotional... I would choose emotional, this may sound weird, but it is so worth it.
Get a group to go to a nursing home and just talk to the people there, find older people and just have a conversation, you will both gain so much from it.
Physical:
Make take some index cards and write down phone numbers and addresses to local homeless shelters, and go around your city and hand them out to homeless, or start a soup kitchen at your school... have a can food drive, and then use your school cafeteria and feed people.

Actually if you think of it musiclover it's you that has all the answers.

What do you like to do? Your a music lover , do you play any instrument? Call up a local youth group and volunteer some time teaching your instrument.

How about people? Can you hand out sandwhiches at a soup kitchen? What about delivering food to the elderly?

Are there skills you wanto to develop? Some businesses won't hire you because you might lack experience in a certain place. Well community service developing that skill is never wasted.

Take your natural interests and use them at corresponding organizations and charities

If you wait till school starts, your high school should have opportunities to do so. I was in high school 2 years ago and I had tons of clubs and other opportunities to do volunteering. I racked up some 300 hours of volunteering in 4 years of high school. Otherwise tutoring center, library (great volunteering place), some shelter, you can do can and food drive. During Haloween, instead of going door to door collecting candy, I collect canned food and give it to the fire station who then donate the cans to a shelter. There are tons of opportunities you will come across, but the best thing to do is see around the community of whats missing or wrong with it and try to fix it.

Well, little known fact, I work at an admissions office, and colleges rarely check if you ever ACTUALLY did the service. It helps to have a letter though, stating that you did the service. Something simple. Like,
To whom it may concern:
____ participated in community service this day of ______ by doing ______.

Obviously something more sophisticated would be better. But the people you're doing the service for (if it's a organization) usually have letters like that ready.
