In most cases, they want to see an official copy that comes from the school -- this sort of thing has gotten way too easy to fake for people to trust even honest-looking people. That basically means you call the school's office and give them the address for whoever wants your transcript.

Often you can get away with bringing in unofficial copies of things at first, but there's frequently a policy that they can revoke your status if they don't see an official transcript by a certain date or it doesn't match what you brought them.
