English Lesson Plans For High School

Hazel Said:

ESL/SDAIE Lesson Plans for 9th Grade English?

We Answered:

There are a million websites out there, but http://iteslj.org/ is very good. Your lesson plan will depend on the methodology or methodologies you're going to follow - task based? ppp? tpr? My experience is mostly in an EFL context so what and how I'd teach in my Korean high school would be different from yours in an ESL context.

I need ideas on five-minute (yes, only five minutes!) lesson plans for high school English!?

We Answered:

A great series of books for mini lessons is Daily Warm-ups (Publisher Walch) they have all different books : one for poetry one for grammar Shakespeare etc...

One of my favorites is the 5 minute poem. Give students an adjective, a noun and a verb and have them write a short poem using at least one poetic element (simile, metaphor etc..)

Another idea that always works is Daily Oral Language..Write sentences on the board and have students correct the grammar and wording.

Try having students work on showing rather than telling in there writing. Explain quickly that telling me your are cold in writing is different than showing me in writing by putting "I was freezing. I could see my breath coming out when I breathed and my hands felt like Popsicles fresh from the freezer." After that have them try to fix one ex: It was hot or I felt sick.

Also, Daily quotations..Pick a quote and have students discuss what it means together. Relate it to other things going on.

Think of activities that are more review that a start of a new lesson..Most of the mini lessons I do are refreshers.
Hope these helped

How do you lesson plan for a high school English class?

We Answered:

Both. Consider the standards, and different ways for students to acquire/demonstrate them. I usually work around a major text, and think about what kinds of outcomes and tasks will suit that text (e.g., Animal Farm goes naturally with research on historical background, so I'll line it up with outcomes relating to research and writing, and Shakespeare goes naturally with outcomes relating to literary analysis and creative writing/representing, and so on). Certain outcomes are more important than others, so they'll get touched on more often. It's kind of a piecemeal process for me - I'll start with the big picture, then figure out how to get there, and then look again at the curriculum to see if I can squeeze a little more out of the unit plan and cover a few more outcomes.
