Sweetie, the manager IS the boss. The fact that you don't recognize this frightens me.

The owner hires a manger to MANAGE the administrative aspects of the business including hiring/firing, training, scheduling, writing letters of recommendation and responding to phone requests for references for former employees. The owner really doesn't want to be involved in the day-to-day issues involving employees.

It is never "wrong" to ask the owner...but good luck getting it to happen. Most likely if you ask the owner he/she will agree and then turn around and ask the manager to write it on his/her behalf.

You can't have "scheduling issues" and expect to bypass that issue by bypassing the manager.

check local employment laws where you work - do a google search or something - but usually if someone is under 18 I think, or a full time student - they have to be limited to part time and 47 hours/week is overtime!

By law I don't think they can schedule you for more than 4 hours on a school day or something anyway - but it's been a long time since I learned this stuff, so check with your local government.

Server job. The tips can add up! I worked at a cinema during high school but the pay was fluff, but the fun I had was priceless. I then waited tables at Bob Evans. I would easily make $300 in a weekend. More upscale places I would assume make more.

Our son became a lifeguard and swimming instructor when he was in grade 10. He did the first shift 3 days a week at the Y (5:30 - 9:00) and went to his school classes from there. In the summer he worked as a waterfront life guard and worked in a garden centre. He also delivered flyers and tutored math and science throughout highschool.
