Get Your High School Diploma At Home

Joyce Said:

Are you allowed to homeschool your own children if you don't have a high school diploma or GED?

We Answered:

Here's a situation we came across this morning in our home education. My eleven year old showed me his math lesson, and I did not remember how to determine slope on a graph. I did graduate from high school. However, I am not worried because learning isn't all about remembering information; it's about knowing how to find information and what to do with it. His textbook is Saxon Math, and it is his teacher. He knows what to do if there is a problem he can't understand: he asks me and we find out together. This is how we, a home educating family, learn.
I hope to raise self-teaching children who can think for themselves and find answers, instead of having spoon-fed information that they must memorize.

Hope this gives you some perspective on a philosophy of home educating. I would encourage you to engage your daughter in conversation, asking her reasons for the choice she has made. If she has a vision, motive, and purpose for home schooling her children, she will be more successful. When you know her vision, motive, and purpose, you will be able to support her and play an even more important role in the lives of your precious grandchildren.
