Terry Said:

Would kids be more interested in high school homework and class if it were on stuff they picked or enjoy?

We Answered:

Unfortunately the stuff kids would probably pick won't give them the classical education that society demands you have if you want to succeed in life. Take a look at the want-ads. Everyone wants a college grad these days. If you're bored amd daydreaming, I would look at other factors besides the class itself. Are you getting enough sleep? Try to find something about each class that can keep your attention. Even if it's how much you DISAGREE with what they're teaching. If you're smarter than the teacher, find the proof and challenge him/her. You sound alot like my stepson who is very intelligent and gets bored easily.

Any Chemistry Whizzes wiling to help me with High School homework?

We Answered:

This question sounds like an exercise in density and volume and area.

When you see 'cubic' meters think about a cube or volume of a box of some sort or (m*m*m = m^3).

(a) what is the volume of a box? V = length * width * height (thick).
BUT you have values of these things in millimeters (mm).

Remember milli- is 1/1000 OR 1 mm = 1/1000 m = 0.001 m
So convert the units to meters.
250 mm = [250 / 1000] m = 0.25 m long
224 mm = 0.224 m wide
50.0 mm = 0.05 m thick or high

Therefore: V = 0.25m * 0.224m * 0.05m = 0.0028 m^3

(b) What is the density of the book?
REMEMBER: Density = Mass / Volume (keep saying that to yourself)
You want (g/cm^3) but you have kg (kilograms) and mm (millimeters).

So you can change the units before you calculate the density or after, you decide.

If I do it like (a) I'll do it before.
SO: 1 mm = 1/1000 m = 0.001 m
AND cm = 1/100 m = 0.01 m
Therefore 1 cm = 10 mm.
ALSO 1 kg = 1000 grams
You need to memorize the 'Prefixes'. e.g. milli, centi, deci, kilo, etc.

Now convert the mm to cm:
250 mm = 25.0 cm, 224 mm = 22.4 cm, 50.0 mm = 5.00 cm
2.94 kg = 2940 grams
then calculate
volume = l * w * h: volume = 25 cm * 22.4 cm * 5.00 cm = 2800 cm^3
d = m / v: d = 2940 g / 2800 cm^3 = 1.05 g/cm^3

Always check your units!!!

(c) What is the area of the cover in m^2?
1 mm = 1/1000 m = 0.001 m
250 mm = 0.25 m long, 224 mm = 0.224 m wide
Area = length * width = 0.25 m * 0.224 m = 0.056 m^2

Hope that helps.

Is there a website that can help me with my high school homework?

We Answered:

just ask one of your friends who knows what's going on to help. doing it online won't really teach you much.

Javier Said:

How much should parents help high school seniors with homework?

We Answered:

If your daughter has trouble in a subject, your help is definitely warranted. I would tell her that you want the best for her and that it is important that she understand physics. Give her an example of how you use physics in everyday life. Cooking is always a great example.

As far as the SAT is concerned, she has to take a practice test and see where she is. Nagging her to study for a comprehensive test is really not useful and yes I would consider it nagging too.

After she takes the practice test and finds her weak spots, she can study in those areas and make sure she is ready to take the real test.

Take care,
Troy
