There is a shortage of math teachers, so I think it's a good idea.

Two options for you:

1) Finish your degree, then apply to an accelerated graduate program that gets you a master's in education and a teacher license in about 18 months (make sure you earn a license through the program).

2) Talk to your counselor asap and see what you can salvage from your current degree. If your school has a state approved teaching program, then maybe it's not too late to switch majors. You will probably add on at least 1-1.5 years.

There is a third option, especially if you want to make a difference. A lot of schools offer free graduate programs for teachers who are willing to teach in the inner city during the course of their studies-which usually take about two years. Northwestern, Notre Dame, and others are among them. Some require you to have an undergraduate degree in education, and some actually require you to have no experience. Look into these as they offer you solid experience with a degree from a top rated school.

There's nothing wrong with being a teacher. If you get a job in a good school district and earn a master's degree the salary gets better.

However, if you are more concerned with money and image issues, then you may want to rethink becoming a teacher. Keep in mind you need to like your job. Having a job other people admire but which you can't enjoy will only get you so much.

Enroll in a college that offers a teaching degree. I went to SIU, but my kids went to Lake Forest (expensive, but lots of scholarships & individualized attention in classes & beyond), ISU (excellent special ed teaching program), and U of I (huge - huge - huge).

You will need to take education classes, as well as math classes (at least 24 credits in math).

Be sure to take advantage of as many activities with children as you can. Baby sit, coach sports, volunteer at a library. This way you'll get to know the age of children you want to work with. During the summers, work at a camp or tutoring. All these activities are looked at, as well as the grades in your education & math classes .... and references --- get them along the way from anyone who knows you. Keep the best ones & file the rest.

I teach in New York which is a test-happy state. I am sorry to say that what works best is doing lots and lots of practice tests. It's a big waste of time but it does improve scores.
