High School Teacher

Dan Said:

What does it take to become a high school teacher and guidance counselor in Ontario?

We Answered:

State requirements differ, but you need to be certified to teach in all states.
For you to accomplish the above this is what you will need, at least here in Missouri.
You would Get a BA in Secondary Education, History and a BA in Secondary Education, English.
You would need a Master degree in Counseling. You will take 3 different Praxis to be certified in each of the above. Of course you can always continue your degree, this is the minimum requirements
Besides the required state courses;English ,History ,Science, Humanities most of your classes will be in History or English related. You will have to know Literature, The history of English, Foreign Language, British Literature, just to name a few. History the same thing. You have to be able to teach the information, students need to learn. I would take English and History courses above and beyond what is required, so to familiarize yourself with the subjects. Sorry, I can not help with the best school in Canada.

Andy Said:

What is the hardest thing about being a high school teacher?

We Answered:

What a coincidence! Just two nights ago I got together with two of my teacher friends from my old school (I was transferred to another school due to a teacher shortage at my new school) and we discussed that.

We agreed that the hardest thing is having to be responsible for all the issues that don't have a darn thing to do with teaching our subject and having no way to control them but have to call mom or dad such as:
1. Low attendance due to extra activities, sports, dance team, band etc.
2. Tardies
3. Dress code violations, hats, colored hair, holes in jeans, pierced body parts, etc
4. Cell phone and other device use during class and unbelievable immature behavior
5. Teaching special ed students a subject way beyond their capability in a mixed class with advanced students
6. Having to tell kids to stop making out in public

All three of us agreed that we should have quit years ago but have too much already invested in our retirement system. Yes it is sad and shameful that we feel this way but this is truly the state of education in America today. If I got a cut in pay and not have to do all these other extra duties I would be a happy and more effective teacher!

Arlene Said:

If you enjoyed high school, does becoming a high school teacher bring back all the fun times?

We Answered:

I did not enjoy high school at all. I could not wait to graduate and leave school forever. It is ironic that I have spent so many years in college and over ten years teaching. If it is in you from the beginning, then it will be in you forever. I am happy to know that there are some really enthusiastic people joining the team. Welcome.

How can I become a high school cheerleading coach without being a high school teacher?

We Answered:

It depends if you want to be paid? I think most schools would accept any type of help like a assistant coach. theres also tons of cheerleading schools. Just look into it a little more. Also some private schools dont ask for a teaching license.
