Ken Said:

I am the Editor-in-Chief of my high school yearbook, how can i use this to my benefit later in life?

We Answered:

i'd suggest following what you're most passionate about and use that energy in your studies, internships, and the job hunt. if it's journalism, aspire to a top-tier school that actually has a great career services/placement office, along with a strong faculty ratings. i'd also recommend going to a larger, financially secure, name-recognizable institution as it'll help you connect with future employers (networking is invaluable and it helps to go to a school with a great academic reputation...believe me, i think about all of the folks i know who went to super small, less-competitive, obscure schools and they had a hard time finding jobs, or in areas that they had gone to school for). plus, with a larger school with a great academic track record, it will offer other great programs that you can transfer over to, if you decide later that journalism isn't your calling.

journalism isn't a dying field - there will always be a market for interesting, relevant writers. the decline of news paper readership are a result of the shift in how people get their information (i.e. online which has the highest rate of increased readership, then tv), which then drives down ad revenue, and then that contributes towards business operating models that aren't profitable, and yes, the recession is a great weeding out process for the less adaptable, less resilient organizations.

the strong shall live... carpe diem
