Online High Schools

Johnny Said:

How do online high schools work?

We Answered:

I am not sure about online high school or GED. With most I have seen with GED they send you books and it is more of a mail-in deal. I however do take online classes sometimes at the local community college. I log into the college website, then into the link to the online course. I log in and it is a completely separate window. The main page has important information and mail info at the right column, and then my name, links to separate classes and icon links under each class to notify me of new mail for that class or any things that are due. Under each class link are tabs for my grades, assignments, syllabus, discussion forums, etc. Most teachers assign tests that you are timed on, some that you can retake more than once, some discussions and maybe a written paper.

Again, this is for 101 classes at my local CC. I know many CC's offer adult education, so hopefully your adult education center online has a silmiliar setup. We have used a couple of different programs, and they are all setup similiar.

Just a note though, online courses do take extra discipline. You have to watch your calendar carefully and urge yourself to study. There is no teacher reminding you about homework, it is up to you to log in and see what is due. Most teachers communication is limited to emails, forum discussions and notices posted on her classes page. :)

Megan Said:

What are the best online high schools?

We Answered:

I think the right answer depends on so many factors including:

1. Where you live.

2. How much you are willing or able to pay.

3. What the desired outcome is.

All that being said, I would find out if there is a free online high school in your state. Use the link below.

However, I would also look at some of the commercial programs. The large free ones (Connections Academy, Insight Schools, K12.com, etc.) are all good, but may not be the perfect fit for your child.

Some of the better online high schools are Laurel Springs, University of Missouri High School, the various Kaplan schools, and a number of others.

Mary Said:

Are there any online high schools that will loan you a laptop for school?

We Answered:

Each school has its own rules about it. You can compare their rules and students feedback here - education.mypressonline.com
