Does anyone know this guy?

We Answered:

You sure know alot about him. All you have to do is search for him on myspace or facebook. I would suggest looking on Myspace first because u can search by high schools and what year they graduated. Good luck!

(1) According to the AYUSA website (http://www.ayusa.org/students/study-abro… and http://www.ayusa.org/students/study-abro…
Program : Time Abroad : Deadline
Academic Year : Aug - June : March 31, 2011
Fall Semester : Sept - Jan : March 31, 2011
Spring Semester '11 : April - July : September 30, 2010
Summer : July - Aug : March 31, 2011
This would lead me to believe that the March 31, 2011, deadline is for if you want to leave in August, September, or July of 2011. If you want to go in April of 2011, you'll have to apply before the end of this month.
(2&3) With respect to the grade level that you will be in while going to Japan, that will be determined by the Japanese school based on your abilities (both academic and language). I can pretty much guarantee that you will not be a full 'senior' (or equivalent) because you will not graduate from the school in Japan. With respect to your school here, you will have to contact your school counselor about this. It will depend on how many credits you have accumulated before you leave, how many credits from your Japanese school your USA school will accept, etc. Many schools view classes taken overseas in the same light that they view home school classes - they'll count towards your graduation requirements but the grades and such won't transfer. So, for example, using the credit system our school uses, if you were to go to Japan in April (for a semester) and take (and pass) a math class, you would get 0.5 of the 3 math credits needed for graduation. What I am not so sure about is how much credit you will get for the classes that you were in before you left (since you would be leaving in the middle of our traditional semester). You should meet with your counselor and work out a plan. Put it in writing, keep one copy, and have another copy put into your school file (it has happened where there were personnel changes and the new person didn't know what the school would accept). There are some students whose time abroad counts for nothing - the don't get any credit or anything. If your school doesn't accept credits from abroad, there still may be a way to graduate at the same time as your current class -- maybe you can take extra classes (perhaps even during the summer) at your school or a local community/junior college now and after you get back. You'll really have to discuss this with your school. If you go to http://yfuusa.org/american-students/more… you can contact students who have gone on exchange before (even one that went to Japan for a year) and ask what they did. Even if you don't have the credits needed for graduation "on time", going on exchange will likely be more than "worth it".
