Scholarship Applications For High School Seniors

Tyrone Said:

Fall Internships for High School Seniors?

We Answered:

What type of internship are you looking for? Working in a lab, working in a police force, working in business, working on the production of a television show?

Because of the economy, many college graduates are unable to find jobs and turn to internships---both paid and unpaid---to bulk up their resumes instead. As a result, it is harder than ever for a high school student to find an internship---and even harder to find a paid one (if that is what you mean by "profitable"). There are also new federal regulations for unpaid internships in for-profit organizations, meaning that the number of those is also going down.

The best way for a high school student to find an internship is either through personal contacts or through your high school's career center/counseling office. Once you are in college, you can ask your professors about interning in their research work or through the university's career center (many professors post their openings there).

Hope that helps!

My daughter is a senior in high school this year. What does she need to do to get good scholarships?

We Answered:

MOST scholarships from all KINDS of groups (church-based, civic groups, ethnic/heritage groups) require essays plus some kind of application.

A lot depends on the circumstances: some are limited to first-generation collegians, some are for people of documented [nationality] descent, and some are open to anyone. My father's union had one for children of members, and it was only @$200 a year, but it did help defray my book costs.

You have ot look around.

Rules:
do NOT pay a fee to apply. Any scholarship that requires you send in a fee is a scam.

Do NOT pay a 'consultant' specifically to 'guarantee' scholarships. Another popular scam.

DO THE FAFSA on January 1, 2010!!!!!!!!!!!! You should be able to 'estimate' your 2009 wages.... use the 2008 tax return for a guideline. You can ALWAYS update it after you get your taxes done. (this also forces the issue for doing income taxes.

BEFORE you do the FAFSA, make sure to liquidate any assets that are in your daughter's name as they will be used to calculate her/your 'ability to pay' for the first year.

Check with the Financial AId office at the college and get a full list of all scholarships and grants available. Some are 'needs based' others are merit-based. Some colleges administer various grants that were left to the college. Also check with the college Alumni Association to see if they have any programs available.

Start your research NOW, as many deadlines come up quickly. A friend of mine got a small grant from the local Lions Club, another from the local Rotary Club, and yet another small grant from the local Chamber of Commerce, which helped out the first year. The deadlines for these was sometime in December of the year before the grant was awarded. (many many moons ago)

You will have to disclose all awards at some point to the college FA office, so keep accurate records.

Good luck, and rmember, the early bird gets the worm!

As a senior in high school, should I be paying more attention to college applications or scholarships?

We Answered:

Most financial aid comes from colleges.

You should focus on college apps and once those are in, begin the hunt for other scholarships.

Concerns about scholarships and financial aid, am a senior in high school this year?

You should begin in your guidance counselors office.
You will need to fill out the FAFSA and please do it online, much faster results! http://www.google.com/#hl=en&source=hp&q… It is the Free Application for Federal Student Aid. To get the most aid do this FAFSA January 1 of the year you will go to college. You use yours and yours parents taxes. Most people dont get their taxes done right away because they have to wait for the W2s from their employer so you can use the previous years taxes and do the fafsa as an estimate and then submit it. Then as soon as you get your taxes done go back on the FAFSA home page above in #3 where it says make corrections and put in the actual tax numbers for that year. For example, my daughter is going Fall 2010. January 1 2010 we did an estimate FAFSA using our 2008 taxes. When we got our 2009 taxes done early in 2010 we went on the FAFSA and made the corrections.
First understand what financial aid is. It does not mean that your college will be paid in full. Aid means to help and support and that is what the govt does it helps you get your education and that is based on your financial need which they determine the information on your FAFSA you submit. A very poor person may get their whole education paid but most people dont fall in that category. The govt aids you by offering you any federal and state grants (these dont get paid back, federal loans like stafford subsidized and unsubsidized, Parent Plus (these need to be paid back, and Federal Work Study. Stafford loans are paid back by the student but they have great inteest rates that are fixed and you can pay them back after you graduate but there are terms http://www.slfc.com/payingstaffordpaybac… Subsidize is offered by financial need and unsubsizides is not, most student can get this. There is no credit check. Parent Plus loans get paid back by the parent and these go by their credit. Federal Work study http://www2.ed.gov/programs/fws/index.ht…
So you do the FAFSA. The govt will process it to find our your financial need and this will generate an EFC estimatede family contribution. This is the amount of money based on your financial picture you and your family should be able to pay toward your education. So if your EFC is 30,000 its likely you wont get any financial aid. The less the number the more you get offered in financial aid. So they put this EFC and a recap of your FAFSA in a report called the SAR student aid report. and this will be ready 2-3 weeks after you do the FAFSA, you will get an email or you can check on the FAFSA home page column 3 where you can view and print it. The govt will send this SAR to every college you listed on the FAFSA and you can add schools if you decide to and you can see that on the FAFSA website. By now you will have already applied for those schools you were interested in. The ones who want to admit you will offer you a financial award which is a total of all the grants and loans and work study you qualify for. You can look at all the awards from the colleges and pick the best one, they will be different. Some colleges even have their own grants they offer. We you decide on one you then have to accept and deny which ones you want. So what you will need to do is do a projected cost of attenndance for the school because the financial aid budget they give is usually a high estimate. Most college websites have a projected cost worksheet like this. http://www.uwp.edu/departments/financial…
If not do your own and call the college to see the actual costs. This way you will see the amount of grants and loans you need. Then you accept and deny which one syou want. You can take a lower amount of loans if you need to but not higher. When you acecept staffords everyone has to do entrance counseling which is online reading about the loan so you know what it is and the terms and there are some multiple choice questions that you can get wrong but then try again until you get it just so you learn the right answers and then when you finish that in like 45 minutes it take you sign up for a MPN master promissory note which is another name for the contract to repay the loan by the terms it says. You may not need all the grants and loans if you get scholarships. If the aid is not enough you need a private loan like from a bank etc, or your parent does.

For Army ROTC scholarship, what would be a good job to get during high school?

We Answered:

Probably the best option would be to get your grades up. I filled out the Marine ROTC scholarship and they never asked what job I did but just that I actually did work at a job and how high up I was.

So pretty much any job as long as you stick to it and get some promotions.
