Scholarships For High School Students Graduating In 2011

Vernon Said:

Could I get into VCU, UNC, Duke, or Wake Forest?

We Answered:

You should be able to get into VCU and Wake Forest with your statistics and maybe UNC if you are a North Carolina resident. It's really hard to get into Duke, but you certainly have a shot. I don't think Science Olympiad will help you -- they'll see that you've only done it for the one year and will assume that you're using it to pad your resume.

Scholarships? Transferring? Moving? HELP ME!!!!! I"M SO CONFUSED!!!?

We Answered:

Realistically, your dreams are high, but it doesn't mean that it's not possible, it will just be VERY hard to achieve.

I think you don't realize how very expensive living in New York can be, and especially if you are trying to go to school there with out-of-state tuition, no income and nowhere to live... Can you afford it?

As of right now you owe about $4,000 in loans from going to college in Indiana, depending on where you choose to go in New York, your loans may double, and even triple, PER YEAR.

If you can manage to find a job in NYC before moving, that would help you out greatly. And if you can come up with enough money to cover for rent and utilities for the first 2 months, you'll be even better off. Just make sure you are willing to borrow money to pay for tuition to whatever college or university you wish to attend.

But aside from the hard work to get there, I think you'll love NYC. You'll have a blast and it will definitely help you learn how to be independent. Work hard! Goodluck!

EDIT

OH, by the way. You can apply for as many scholarships as you'd like. Most scholarships require a great academic history along with extracurricular activities or athleticism, but there are several out there that may not require much at all, you should look around and apply to as many as you can in hopes of a chance to get a good sum of money.

If you'd like to talk to your counselor to make sure that your college credits would transfer, and look into your major and career field, that would be a good idea.

What are my chances of getting into UT Austin?

We Answered:

UT is probably not for you either. But based on all this I would say you have a good shot at getting in.

What are available financial aids for University of California Irvine?

We Answered:

Your only 15? You have awhile to go before scholarships and loans will apply to you. Wait until your senior year to start looking. Because you won't be starting college anytime soon, financial aid is pointless to you. During your junior year start investigating the scholarships that UCI has to offer. Then during your Senior year, start writing your essays and apply for your FAFSA. Your FAFSA will be your main ticket to loans, grants, and scholarships.

Help with getting in to college?

We Answered:

SAT scores are mattering less and less to colleges. Graduating at 16 and having a high GPA says a lot. On the application process, if it has an optional essay, DO THE ESSAY. Seriously. I got accepted to all my colleges with an SAT score of 1760, no ACT test, only one Advanced Placement test score (which I failed) and I only took the SAT once instead of the usual two or three times that guidance counselors recommend. Make sure you're involved in extracurricular activities and have leadership positions. They love that. I'd also recommend applying for a better visa because you WILL need financial aid, no matter what. Good luck!

Should I open a Roth IRA?

We Answered:

I would focus on paying off my debt before I began investing. Your mind is in the right place with a Roth IRA. They are great for young people.
