Science Activities For High School
Kirk Said:
Activities for Science/Ecology club at school? We Answered:
Perhaps you could have an animal/plant of the week. Something from your area or that lives in or near the river, so the members have an easier time connecting to it. You could go over some basics, like: this animal eats this, and this eats that animal, and then what the conservation status of this creature is (remember, it doesn't have to be threatened to be appreciated!). You could begin by asking them what comes to mind when they think of that animal or plant, so you're all aware of how the general public may hold this organism's "value" to be. Then the rest of the presentation would basically be illustrating how "valuable" nature finds them, and what their impact on the local ecosystem would be if they suddenly died out (or if they went through a huge population boom).Charlie Said:

What are some after-school activities for someone that wants to major in engineering? We Answered:
After school tutor for math and science classes. Doesn't necessarily have to be at high school; could be junior high or even elementary school. You could also tutor math/science at an adult education facility for those working on their GED's. Get with the editor of your school paper and see if you could do a weekly/monthly article like "Science Corner" or "Math Corner." Maybe try job shadowing at various engineering firms. Good luck!Andrew Said:
extracurricular activities in high school? We Answered:
What you do is not the most important thing. Excel at what you do is the important part. Colleges probably don't care about what you do (of course you should probably do something related to your intended major), especially since you're probably not going to do either one as your college major. lolAs I said, the important thing is to distinguish yourself in the things you participate in, like win medals at sci. oly. (which i did for 4 years in high school as well, btw), or be the captain of the soccer team. Leadership and awards are what colleges are what make what you do significant. It's depth, not breadth, that matters.

Thomas Jefferson High School For Math Science and Technology Admission? We Answered:
I just made it into Thomas Jefferson and I was in Geometry in 8th grade. Your math level does not usually matter, you should at least be in Algerbra 1 (which is no problem for you). I know a boy at my school who applied for TJ and recieved a perfect score on test and was enrolled in Pre-Calculus, but he didn't make it. This is because he didn't do his homework and wasn't very involved in after school activities. Some suggestions for after school activies are to join a science club (possibly science olympiad or Ecybermission) and to keep doing math counts and model un. Again, I have friends who did all three of those clubs and didn't make it in. So, if you're really good at one club and have gotten awards, and it takes up a lot of time, I suggest just sticking to that one club and possibly a sport.
You can find a sample admission test on the TJ website a few months before the test. Just find a quiet spot at your home or go to the library and take two hours to complete the test. A little advice: the math section is one of the most important parts because, if you make it through the first cut, it is used in judging you in the second cut. Do the same thing for the essay, but limit yourself to one hour per essay. If you want to re-do the essays or test, you can look in SAT books or ask your parent(s) for writing prompts.
If you make the first cut, you must fill out an application listing your intrests and acheivements. You also need to send in two teacher reccomendations. Make sure to "suck up" to your teachers (just be polite and compliment them). I know, it sounds kind of strange, but it works.
This shouldn't be a problem for you, but try to keep your GPA above a 3.5. In 8th grade, I had about a 4.05, which gave me extra help getting in.
You seem to be, so far, well prepared to get into TJ. Just keep up the good work and you may make it!

What can you say to a secondary school that is not inclined in any sports activities? We Answered:
If science is the focus at this school then all the effort would go into this area. Sometimes schools do not have enough resources to maintain every area. If you are so keen for sporting activities, why don't you join a sports team outside of school.
