Marsha Said:
Is there a genuine reason as to why we aren't taught how to learn in school? We Answered:
Finally someone sees that.School is important. But, the school systems in place today are not more than encouragement to make jobs to keep being a money slave to your gov.
And because of that, they don't want to give you facts, and they don't want you to know how to think, all they want is to make you think you're smart so you go get a job and pay them.

My Social work placement in a secondary school.?We Answered:
The Drop In Session is a great idea. I run one in a couple of schools i work in and its a great way to get to know the yp.Keep it informal, nothing too heavy. If they want any advice be on hand to help them etc.Keep the parents and yp sessions apart. You'll find that your more likely to achieve more by doing this.
Do you have a remit or have you been given free range? The best way is to go into their form classes and see what it is the yp want.
You may find however, that you'll be working with pupils who are persistent non attenders,at risk of being excluded etc etc. Then it gets a bit harder. Small groupwork sessions on raising self esteem, confidence building, acceptable behaviours might be called for in this instance.

At what point does a child in secondary school get help via SEN?We Answered:
Every school is required in law to have someone who has charge of special educational needs. His mother could speak to the SENCO (Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator) or Inclusion Manager to discuss her concerns with them. The SENCO/Inclusion Manager should be able to assess the child's ability and determine what kind of help can be offered within the school, if the child needs help from outside agencies the SENCO would be the person who can access these services. She should also try discussing her concerns with the class teacher & talk about his difficulties doing homework in the evenings.
The Parent Partnership in your area will also be able to discuss the SEN provision that should be available in the area, they may also run a homework club. It might be worth asking the school as well if they run a homework club.
