Stuyvesant High School
Cathy Said:
How do I get into Stuyvesant High School? We Answered:
Okay, first of all, Brooklyn is part of NYC.Second of all, the only way to get into Stuy is to take the SHSAT at the correct time and get a high enough score. How high is determined by the scores of the other kids who took the test and the number of seats being offered at the time you took it.
There are two times to take the test:
It is given in the fall (usually in late October or early November for kids who currently reside in NYC and are in 8th grade (applying to enter 9th grade) or in 9th grade (applying to enter 10th grade.)
You may not be a resident of NYC by the time the test is given (and there is a cut off date for when you must have proved that you reside here. Also there is a cut off date to request a ticket for admission to the test.) If you moved here after that date, you can take the test in the August before you enter either 9th grade or 10th grade. (It is given on a particular day, you can't just take it any time in August.)
However, it's HARD to get into Stuy!!! Moreover, it's not the right place for everyone.
My daughter and I toured Stuy and we both decided it definitely isn't for her! And I think, truthfully, that it's not the right place for many kids!
You really need to think about what you want from a high school before applying. And, if you can get here to do so, go to a few open houses, tour a few schools, and research a little before making any decisions on your high school application.
A good place to start researching is a website called Insideschools.org where they post really great reviews based on way more than just test scores. They visit schools and interview principals for their reviews. They also have great forums for discussion of school issues. And you can do an advanced search for the elements of a school that really appeal to you!
And remember, just because all of these schools are in the same City doesn't mean they are all close enough to where you live! You really need to be aware of the travel time, particularly since you will probably be commuting there by subway, and even some schools in Brooklyn may not be as accessible to the subway line you live on. I told my daughter that a little over an hour was the farthest away I would consider for a school she wanted to go to. (She's going to a school that's just over an hour away this September!)
Good luck!

Why is everyone talking about how hard Stuyvesant high school is to get into, and how hard it is?We Answered:
Well I'd bet your 100 times smarter than me. lolzz. I'm in the 7 grade and I took a practice test, and i bombed it. i got a 70 raw score. So as you can see for me its hard, and I need all the practice I can, even though I'm an Honers Student. =D!! I really suck, but I really want to goto Stuy. I'm not sure if I'll make it, as i said before, I reaallly suck. Alot of people find itvery hard to get in, and get really stressed out from all the work.hope this helped =P *winks*

What is the required raw score on the SHSAT for Stuyvesant High School? We Answered:
I think u would get into bronx science with that score. i'm not sure but i think u should aim for a score in the 90s for stuy.Esther Said:
what chance do i have to get into Stuyvesant high school? We Answered:
everyone has the same chances of getting in. as long as you live in nyc or you fake that you live here. i have way to many friends who live in staten island and they have to take the bus, train, and ferry. its not like you are allowed for more latenesses or that they even care that you live in staten island. i live over one hour from stuy anyways. just study for the admin test cuz its very hard and long. and dont forget to choose stuy as the primary choice!Raul Said:

Any tips on Swimming Test and starting Stuyvesant High School? We Answered:
stuy is just like any other high school, with teachers of pretty high standards and great classmates. the placement exam will consist of a math test (depending on the math class you take currently), a language test (depending on which language you got for the school), and the swimming test. For the math test, i believe that during open house, they were selling study/practice books, but if you didnt get one, thats okay. the placements are nothing to worry about- they only determine the level of the class you will be taking this fall. As for the swimming test, if you know how to swim but if you cant wear a bathing suit because of religious reasons, i would suggest buying a wet suit (if you dont already have one), the ones that cover the whole entire body. If you do not take the swimming test, you will be mandated to take one semester of swimming in stuy.goodluck(:
