Should my daughter go to Exeter or stay at her current school? We Answered:
Congratulations! From your information, I understand that your daughter was educated in international schools, and is very strong academically.
I am also a girl, and I was a new Upper (junior) at Exeter this year. I have been educated in International schools my entire life, and I was a straight A student in all honors classes before I came to Exeter.
I have no experience with Andover, but let me give you some good information about Exeter.
I will never regret coming to Exeter. It is an amazing school. I never had a problem adjusting. During the first month, the school created events for new students to meet old students. The entire first week was devoted to make new students feel at home. There are dozens of clubs through which to meet people.
As a new junior, your daughter would be housed in a "house". At Exeter, houses are smaller dorms of approximately 15 students who are all Uppers and Seniors. All the houses interact together as one larger dorm, and they have great atmospheres. My dorm was amazing. From what I have heard from other students, all have enjoyed their experiences in their new dorms. Because you live with the other students, you make connections and friendships more quickly than you would at a day school.
I have built amazing relationships with the faculty in my house. There is one faculty who lives in the house, and approximately 7 faculty who do check-in duty during the week.
Thus, as to your question about the "friendliness" of Exeter, let me assure you that it is the best school I have experienced in that regard. It is much friendlier than some of the International schools I have attended, and there are absolutely no cliques.
You also asked :
"Most students at Exeter probably have lots of advantages over her over the years of their elite training. If she is at the bottom of her class at Exeter, she probably has a lot to catch up, but very likely won’t have enough time to move to the top before submiting university applications; the teachers probably won’t have enough time to know her well for insightful recommendation letter. Also, will the enormerou opportunities of Exeter unbelievable extracurriculum programs will open to too many opportunities for a new Grade 11 student? "
It is normal for grades to drop slightly when you are a new student. The standards of the school are high, but most importantly the Harkness method takes some adjusting to. From straight As, I fell to a B+ average my first term. It doesn't take long, however, to adjust. I am now at an A- average.
Finally, you asked if the extracurricular opportunities would be open to your daughter.
Yes, they will. There are certain programs, such as the Island School term abroad, which are for younger students and she will not be able to attend. Everything available to other Uppers and Seniors, she will have access too. All the classes, all the sports, and all the clubs.
Finally, I just encourage you to think not only about improving her chances of getting into an Ivy league school, but of how well Exeter will prepare her for such a college. After the rigorous academics at Exeter, she will be more able to deal with rigorous coursework later on.
If you are attending Experience Exeter in April, ask your guides, the teachers, and the admissions office for their opinions. They have had a lot of experience, and it is in their interest to be honest. The Academy admitted your daughter because they feel that she is a good fit - they want to make sure that she will like it there. I did the same with my parents, who were not sure. After the tour, we all loved it. Just remember that you will be jet lagged, so wake yourselves up well so you remember everything!

Boarding School Help?We Answered:
Your parents may not want you to go to boarding school because they believe they cannot afford it. If they have 3 children to send to college, and 2 already exhausted college savings at a boarding school and the economy is poor and their stock portfolio lost 20% or more and the value of your home went down, then they may be justified in saying no.If the issue is not financial, then you might ask them why they think the local high school is a good fit for you. Is it possible that it is a good high school, but your brothers just got involved with the wrong crowd? Perhaps they believe you won't.
You might feel that it is unfair that your brothers got to go a special school, while you must go the public school. Did your brothers get expelled from your public school? In that case, your parents didn't have much of a choice if they wanted your brothers to finish high school.
In general, parents want what is best for their child. Even if your brothers got expelled from the public school, your parents must still believe that it is a good school. If they think it not a good choice but they just cannot afford anything else right now, then you have to keep the discussion going.
What you need to determine is if their reluctance is based on finances, or because they believe the public school is the best choice for you. If it is financial, you need to determine if they can qualify for financial aid, or if there is a merit scholarship you can apply for. If it is because they believe the public school is the best option for you, then why not give it a try? If you still feel it is not the right choice, you can have another discussion with your parents giving concrete examples of why it is not the right choice for you.

Can you remove a withdraw on a high school transcript due to mental helath related problems?"?We Answered:
Well, no- but don't sweat it. A transcript is what it is, a record of what happened. A college usually doesn't really care what the high school transcript says- so long as the entrance exam scores, ACT or SAT scores are good. At most, they might ask what happened. So if that happens, you just say you were diagnosed bipolar, and the gaps represent the time when you were in treatment. The transcript will also show that you had major improvement, which is mostly what they want to see. Don't get excited about blips in a record. It's more important that the blip down shows a rise back up, and stays steady after that. Just go ahead and apply, and answer the questions honestly if they come up. You don't have anything to be ashamed of. You had a rough spot, it was taken care of, and you stay up with it now. What counts isn't that we make mistakes, but rather what we do to fix them. Bouncing back means you can meet a challenge and rise above it. That says a lot more about you than a record of straight A's would. That's a person who probably doesn't know what a struggle is, and who knows how they will react? Your record shows how you do. So, apply away dear. Good luck, hope it's the school of your choice that sends you back the greeting.Mathew Said:
School board terminated my employment before the end of the academic year?We Answered:
For the items you mention as "sufficient cause" they could most likely terminate you immediately. Your contract basically said they can decide to terminate you with 2 month's notice. To be real honest, it sounds like you didn't have control of the class, a trait teachers have to have. Your reviews had said that. Content knowledge is needed, but isn't enough.
If they gave you the 2 months notice that your contract required, doesn't sound like you have any recourse. Not sure where you get the idea that they hadn't originally signed the contract in good faith - that's your anger talking over being fired.
Yes I've "been there done that" many years ago. I was a good teacher if I had a small group, but had a hard time controlling a class of 34, which was the norm then. I didn't get terminated, but ended up going into another field than teaching. And students haven't gotten easier to work with, I hear, in the 40+ years since I decided to leave teaching.
Good luck.
