Volunteer Programs For High School Students

Lydia Said:

Where can I find Physical Therapy Intern Programs or volunteering for high school students in WV?

We Answered:

call your local PT clinic or hospital (ask for the PT or rehab director). Also if you are interested in kids, call a school for special needs. They hold summer school and you should be able to volunteer.

Travis Said:

Are there any summer programs for high school students interested in psychology?

We Answered:

Few colleges will allow non-enrolled students to taken anything beyond the introductory course in psychology, and for that, you'd be better off waiting until you are in college. Volunteer activities are always a good resume builder, but don't forget to take care of your academic record. For a school like Columbia, you will need top marks.

Camp counseling can be helpful, but only if there's something special about it (special needs kids, bad neighborhoods, etc). Simply being a camp counselor (I was one at a scout camp), doesn't tell admissions committees much. Good luck!

Volunteer Summer Programs in August for High School Students?

We Answered:

You will need a few thousand dollars to go abroad, paying for your air transportation, in-country transportation, work permit, staff time to supervise and train you, accommodation, etc. At this point, it will be hard to find a volunteering gig available (most are filled), but it's worth trying if you already have your finances all lined up (about $3000).

Most volunteering-in-the-Gulf programs have the same requirements: you need to pay for your airfare to and from the site, your food, and your accommodation (though if you go through a community of faith, you may be housed in a church and need only bring an air mattress and sleeping bag, in addition to money for food). Start calling local communities of faith (churches, temples, mosques) to see if they have any trips to help in the Gulf planned. Also use google to find programs.

You can also volunteer right in your own area. Here are suggestions:

What kinds of low-cost volunteer abroad programs are available to high school students?

We Answered:

There are a LOT of opportunities for under $3000. The biggest cost to worry about is airfare.

How far abroad are you willing to go?

Cultural and Academic Travel Organization (CATO) has a variety of programs that put you to work with children (primarily orphans) in Ghana, Africa. I've been looking into volunteer abroad programs like these for about a year now, and CATO charges the least of anyone (by FAR). They offer a lot of programs for just $500! That doesn't include airfare, of course.

i-to-i is a well-known and respected travel organizations that specializes in a variety of "meaningful trips." They're probably the best single organization for you to look into. They've got so many different types of trips all around the world, from coaching kids sports camps to conserving wildlife to building homes to helping orphans to painting murals to teaching English. Ask them to send you their catalogue. I did, and I was surprised to see that it's full-color and almost a centimeter thick.

volunteerabroad.com is also a really good search engine for looking up opportunities like this.

What kind of volunteer programs are there for post-high-school, pre-college students (that don't cost money)?
