Assessment Of Learning

Constance Said:

Are there any research articles that say standardized testing IS a valid assessment of student learning?

We Answered:

Yuck. As the mother of a nonverbal person with autism, I agree with you that it's not a good measure. But in debate, you can always find "facts" to back your case, on either side. They might laugh you down if you start to cite internet sources though, so I would go to the library instead, and ask the reference librarian to get you started. I hope the debate is not tomorrow.

adaptive assessment and learning styles?

We Answered:

If you apply a broad range (or allow for choice) in your assessment then you have adapted your assessment. If you want to do it for individuals then you would have a general test before the course started and then assess to the strengths in the group or individual ad assess according to this knowledge. Eg: Include more speaking or acting tasks. I think the easiest way is just to let people choose different presentation methods for their assessment.

I have the WASL (Washington Assessment of Student learning) how can i get prepared?

We Answered:

First off, I'm sorry. I had to take that two years ago. Don't worry, you're able to forget step-up to writing next year :)

You said most of what I was going to say.

Get a good night sleep (you know, don't stay up all night on Y!A :P).

I would just eat what you normally do for breakfast. I ate breakfast when I wasn't used to, and it was weird. If you don't typically eat breakfast and you do want to eat one, though, make it something small. Try not to drink too much, too, since your bathroom breaks will be limited.

Bring quick, easy snacks (not ones in bags that are loud and obnoxious, or messy snacks). Or, maybe just bring a few sticks of gum.

Your mind is bound to wander, but you have to force yourself to focus. If you focus now, you can save yourself from having to retake the WASL again next year. And, don't freak out about time. The WASL isn't timed. If you find yourself short on time, you'll most likely be taken to the library to finish the test with those who also needed more time.

And just relax-- passing the WASL isn't life or death, no matter how much it may seem like it :)

Like I said, you already know everything I just said... But good luck :D

Don't forget your #2 pencils!
