Home Learning Courses

Byron Said:

Are home learning courses worth doing?

We Answered:

There are a number of ways you can gain qualifications through home learning. Two well established organisations are the National Extension College, http://www.nec.ac.uk/courses/ and the Home Learning College, http://www.homelearningcollege.com/ . Both offer a wide range of courses and qualifications, including A levels and vocational qualifications.

It may also be helpful to think about any specific employment options that may be of interest so that you narrow down possible areas of study. As you don’t indicate where you live you may find it helpful to look at the relevant careers guidance site for your area; see http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/EducationAnd… - England
https://www.careersserviceni.com/Culture… - Northern Ireland
http://www.careerswales.com/ - Wales

Referring to your question about how qualifications from distance learning institutions are viewed by employers, a local careers adviser should be able to advise on employer requirements in relation to qualifications, skills and experience in various employment sectors.

Many UK universities now offer distance learning courses and qualifications, including certificates, diplomas and degrees. If you are over 21, you would be classed as a mature student for university. If this applies, it may be worth looking at http://www.ucas.com/students/maturestude… in case circumstances would enable you to attend an access course at any stage.

Perhaps the best known is The Open University (OU) where entry is by guidance not selection (i.e. A’ levels or access courses are not essential). You can have a look at http://www.open.ac.uk/ for general information on courses and qualifications, funding and careers advice. If you see courses of interest, an adviser from your region can help you decide on the most appropriate study pathway and provide information on the study or funding support available, for example. For contact details of your regional centre, see http://www.open.ac.uk/about/organise/p3.… - staff in Student Services will be happy to help you. An Openings course (http://www3.open.ac.uk/courses/search/sh… may be of particular interest - these short courses provide an opportunity to sample a subject area while developing relevant study skills.

I hope this helps answer your question and wish you well in your future study.

are the DCA home learning courses any good?

We Answered:

You need to ask this in "higher education", not "homeschooling".

Felicia Said:

does anyone know much about home learning courses?

We Answered:

I think you have to be really careful with home study courses. My husband spent a lot of money on these when he was studying computer programming, then when it came to get jobs he found out his qualifications weren't recognised by any employers.

He then went on to get a degree through the Open University which IS recognised. I would really recommend the Open University, everyone has heard of them and they offer nationally recognised qualifications at different levels.

Erik Said:

Is there any kind of home learning courses that are cheap?

We Answered:

If you live in the UK, then try The Open University
www.open.ac.uk
They offer a wide variety of courses and qualifications up to higher degree level.
Your fees will be paid for you in full if you comply with certain financial circumstances. Even if you or anyone in your household are working full-time, some help may still be available depending on your household income.
You do not have to work for a qualification, but if you would like to, you can start with a Cert. level and proceed from there.
You are probably a bit late for many of the courses as most start in Jan/Feb. However, there are several that start in Sep/Oct and there are short courses that begin several times during the year.
Best of luck!
