when i was little my dad got me Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing 8 and he put a news paper over my hands on the keyboard so i couldnt look, but honestly, the thing that helped me the most was Instant Messenger. for me the "home row" (asdf and hjkl) are more of just a guideline. my fingers dont necessarily rest there whenever im not typing. I used to be really slow at typing, and pretty terrible at it, but the more i instant messenged people the more i needed to be fast at it and it just sort of came to me. you need to look at the screen to see the conversation, you know. also, looking at a paragraph written down on a piece of paper, maybe something you just write down on a sheet of paper and typing it is good practice. I used to have to do that for reports, like id hand write it first but then i had to type it up for class. it takes forever if you have to look at the paper and then your hands and then the screen and back and forth and everything. but if you can just look at the paper and type then it goes so much faster. i made a lot of mistakes at first but now im always surprising people with how fast i am. my family or friends will hear me or see me typing and always make comments about how ridiculously fast it is.

Its different for everyone, because everyone learns differently. The programs were nice to teach me about the basics of it like the home row keys and all of that, so that would be good if you havent already learned stuff like that, but ive used a bunch of different programs and the thing that really made it stick, and really made me fast, was just practice.

a couple weeks at most until you can type ok-ish, if you practice daily.

once you can type enough to have more chances to practice - type essays and the like - then you'll improve massively and very quickly.

I learnt by simply opening up a microsoft word document, and just typing a made-up random story thats doesnt make sense at all, and dont go back and sort your mistakes out until you are near the end of your story, you'll start to see how your mistakes are grdually drecreasing lol :-D
