My kids have a V-Smile and like it pretty well. The best learning game I ever game them was the Leapster - by far! They started using it when they were young, about 3 years old. And now at 4 and 6, they are still playing games on it all the time!

Oddly enough, the other learning game that my kids love is Webkins. I resisted Webkins for a long time, because I was worried that they were just a waste of time and more of that "video game nonsense".

Well, I was very wrong!

My 6 year old is learning not just the silly little games, but she is learning to earn money, budget her money, and save money. In order to buy things for her Webkins pet, she has to earn the money, and then figure out if she has enough. Sometimes she'll decide that she has enough, but doesn't want to spend that much money, so she's also learning to save.

Some of the mini games on Webkinz are educational - there is a great typing game. It even trips me up *blush* - yes I play Webkinz sometimes too. There is also a trivia/quiz section that my kids really enjoy.

And finally, my kids like many of the online sites where you can play for free - such as nickjr.com or playhousedisney.com etc. Dora has some really nice educational games, as does Blue's Clues, and I think Diego.

PBS Kids offers an array of educational games for kids. You only mentioned BBC, so I'm not sure whether or not you are located in the US or UK. Either way, "Between the Lions" is a great educational show that focuses on literacy. If you feel as though your nephew may be having difficulty learning to read, it might be wise to seek the help of a trained professional to ensure that there are no underlying causes such as hearing impairment (what you think is normal may actually not be!), Dyslexia, or even a basic learning disability.
