Vivian Said:

Are chinese kids all learning english?

We Answered:

Yeah. I've actually taught English in China - from kindergarten to adults.

Kindergarten kids are so smart. It's really shocking.
Adults are kind of dumb. They can't get pronunciations right. (The sounds of English are quite different from Chinese.)

But yeah, basically from primary school to middle school to high school, all the kids learn English. But... a lot of them learn very poorly. And even more speak poorly. China is a country of written exams. So they stress proficiency in written tests over oral speaking. That means, even a university grad who has passed a high level in English could only read and write English, but not necessarily speak it.

And Chinese are used to hearing the thick-chinese accent of their teachers, and so they repeat the same thick (often mispronounced) words. That means, as native English speakers, you won't be understood by many Chinese. And you probably won't understand them either, because their english accent is so terrible.

Only a few who are really excited about the West, or have a natural talent for languages become really fluent at English. I've met a few that could speak without a Chinese accent. They spoke english perfectly.

So 10 years from now, they will still be speaking really bad english, and you won't understand.

Actually, Chinese prefer to speak Chinese if they know a foreigner can speak Chinese as well. They feel more at ease speaking Chinese, and they will be more friendly.

Alfredo Said:

whats a good english learning program online where kids can learn english?

We Answered:

I've worked with the Muzzy Program as a secondary source of exposure to the language for many years now and children enjoyed it very much. However, I haven't used it as the sole source so I can't guarantee it will be 100% effective but since your cousin will be attending school, I think it will provide a good source of fun, learning and reinforcement.

They offer a free trial version so it might be worth your money.

The cartoon format is nice, the songs are catchy and the games, fun. Besides, the BBC is reportedly a serious and sound company.
