buy refrigerator magnets from dollar store, get a few packages. Make a new word or so a day and tell him what you are doing. Just let him watch, it will click soon.

This is a great site and you can copy the order they introduce sounds and word combinations in your own teaching at home.

hang 4-5 sight words up at a time in your home using tacky (a great adhesive in the school supplies section, blue is the best). Keep moving them to different places and quizzing him until he knows it, then cycle in new words. (Its good to start with the, and, and said)

while in the car, bath, or at dinner play rhyming games. This helps prime their minds to understand the magic of sounding out words.

Also play games where you try to think of as many words as possible that start with the same sound. It helps with phonemic awareness (gets him ready to sound things out)

read aloud as often as possible and try to find books that truly fascinate him, (there is no better motivation than that for a child to learn to read)

Always find a way to present learning activities as a game, then they feel no pressure and work harder at it.

Teach them to be creatvie. Have them make things. Anything, like rock people( go to the beach and get some really cool rocks, glue eyes on them and grass or cotton for hair) they look neat when they are done. Or have them start to draw or paint. Its messy but its fun and they could one day be a cartoonist
