Learn At Home Courses

Learn at home courses?

We Answered:

An IT course is always useful especially the ECDL course as a lot of employers look for candidates who have that. IT careers did have a lot of job vacancies a few years ago but i dont know how many jobs there are now. Maybe look on the jobcentre website for that kind of role in your area and see what the employers are asking for. You could also look at computeach and other such like trainers as they claim to help you get a job after the course. You could also look at Learndirect.
Any course is useful as it shows a willingness to learn and to better yourself. You need to decide what you want to do as a career. Do you really want to do a course and get a job in that sector of something you really dont enjoy doing? We spend way to much time at work not to enjoy it.
Go talk to your local college about what options they have for you. Maybe an accounts course, admin courses or practical course such as plumbing or electrician might suit you. They will be able to help you find the right one for you, your level of achievement so far and your career aspirations.

What ever you decide to do, Good Luck.

Has anyone done a learn at home course?

We Answered:

So long as you do courses that lead to accredited qualifications, employers should trust them. You can check whether a course is accredited at http://www.accreditedqualifications.org.… .

That doesn't guarantee that the course will be well taught. I used the NEC and my mother used the OU and now works for them. They are both fairly good. I can't vouch for the others.

If you are training for a particular job check that the qualification is the right one. You can check the required courses at the Jobs4U website (just google it) which lists most jobs, along with what you need to get in to the job and the training you have to do, or the relevant sector skills council. To find the right SSC do a web search for Sector Skills Council and the sector, such as construction or finance. You could also ask employers what they look for.

If money is an issue you can usually take courses pretty cheap or even free at college, but obviously most people looking at distance learning (learn at home) can't do that for some reason or another.

I would just warn you that although they will often let you take any course, that does not mean you will be able to complete the course. For example the OU will let anyone take a third year degree course without any GCSEs, but they will fail.

Know Any Learn at Home Art Courses?

We Answered:

If you are interested in drawing, there is a great course that is available on CD-Rom from Masterpiece Art Instruction. It is called "The Phonics of Drawing". I am using it to teach my daughter (15) who is home schooling for high school. Here is a link to their website:

They also have some free tutorials on the site and there are other art courses available too. They are very good for the beginning artist.

Can Computer courses be learnt at home?

We Answered:

Yes I believe you can. Although nothing compares to an actual class.

If you're going to learn something from home I would learn JAVA first. download an sdk from Sun off their website. And I would recommend finding some tutorials off the web, they're a good start. In order to learn you MUST practice. Computer courses isn't like history where you can just read and memorize, it takes real application. I would ONLY learn one thing at a time. You only need one programming language to understand another... so learn java and not worry about C or C++, unless you want to deal with pointers which are a pain in the ***.
