Do all children in China learn Chinese?

I would think their school system is preparing them for life in the Chinese culture like every school system in the world prepares their kids for life in their culture. So I'm pretty sure they teach chinese like Americans teach english.

I would like to learn Chinese in China - is this possible?

Most reputable schools/universities require students to have a univeristy degree to teach English in China. Of course, there are always those who don't follow the rules, but it's always a risk to go with them. Additionally, you will want to make sure you have the proper visa (Z) to teach . . . China has been known to deport people who work on tourist or student visas.

You can come to China as a student. Costs aren't as high as they would be in the UK. If you went to Beijing, you could go to the Beijing Language and Culture University (BLCU). You can find more information about their program at:

It takes more than being a native speaker to teach English. There are many "backpackers" in China who sign on to teach somewhere and think that just standing in front of a group of students and "talking" is the same as teaching. If you do decide to pursue teaching, even on a part time basis, then I recommend Donald Snow's book, "More than a Native Speaker." That will give you a solid idea of how to manage classrooms, etc.

Good luck!
