You don't say anything about your situation ... but if you are an immigrant with leave to remain, and especially if you are on a low income, many local authorities organise free or heavily subsidised classes for adults in English as a foreign language. I would suggest that you try the website of the London borough where you are resident ... I am pretty certain you will be able to find a class which is affordable for you, even if it isn't free. You should also pick up the free newspapers which are printed for many of London's immigrant populations ... you will also find details of classes in there.

My mom teaches ESL classes for free at our church. You might want to call local churches to see if they offer anything similar. Most church run ESL programs will teach you regardless of your religious beliefs too.

Try Learndirect? You can do all types of courses thru these as its run by the Jobcentre, and best of all, its free! I'm not sure if they do a language course but its worth a go?
If they dont, you could always have a look on the internet for free English language course you can do on line? Or my final suggestion.....a Linguaphone language course, they probably arent free, but i dont think they are very expensive and as you can do them from home its easier to learn the language as it would be at your own pace.

I know that some of the Japanese were using Text-To-Speech programs to learn, type, and listen to English. Mac OS 10.5 a very nice voice called Alex. Windows has some voices that are adequate. Some vendors have some really nice voices for Windows for around $30. A program called TypeIt ReadIt is freeware and your friend's cousin can use it to type English (or just cut and paste text into it) and have the computer read back. This will help in pronunciation. The program can be downloaded at http://www.schoolfreeware.com
