What's a good martial art I can learn from home?

We Answered:

You cannot learn any Martial Art Online, from a book, or from a DVD. There is no substitute for a competent qualified instructor. Only a qualified instructor will catch the mistakes that ALL beginners will make. You may think you are doing the moves exactly as you see them, but you cannot see the small mistakes in body position, or timing, or a hundred other things. The absolute best you could manage is a hollow ineffective shadow of the art. Add to that the fact if you ever did join a class the things you would have to Unlearn before you started learning the correct way would at least double your time.
Let me ask you a question, would you trust your life to a doctor who had only studied online or just from a DVD? No? Then why would you trust your life to a self defense you learned online?

how do i learn to become midwife from home?

We Answered:

As far as I know all the courses are hospital/college based since there is practical as well as theory to be mastered, especially if you haven't got a nursing qualification.

howtobecomeamidwife.co.uk

has some information which may be useful but I don't think that home study is an option although part-time study may be.

Reputable learn from home photography course?

We Answered:

You'll learn a lot faster, not to mention cheaper, with a course you attend or, if you don't want to give up your day job, by joining a good photography club. Some of these clubs in the UK are Lottery funded and have to offer free courses as part of their Lottery remit.

You can't beat having the tutor right there with you especially when learning the important basic bits.

Some of the clubs in the larger cites here in the UK are affiliated to the Royal Photographic Society and you can sit their exams and submit portfolios through the club. Here in the UK having FRPS (Fellow of the Royal Photographic Society, which takes some getting) after your name is about as high as you can go in Photographic qualifications, its also an Internationally recognised qualification.

All that said, some of the best photographers I've ever known have never set foot in a classroom or sat any exams, they learnt their craft by doing it. Starting with a reputable studio, or press agency as a 'gopher' and working their way up. Local clubs and Colleges often know of good photographers who will take a prospective photographer under their wing. They will also work you hard for very little money!! You'll learn more from a good photographer in six months than you'll learn in years with remote learning.

what are some creative ways i can learn hip hop dance moves from home without paying for lessons?

We Answered:

I found the free stuff not to be so good, so I bought these Dance DVDs and I love it!!! :) http://ohurl.com/tZ
He is actually the Choreographer and Teacher from "Dancing with the Stars". I'm not sure if there's hip-hop though, but I like the other styles too.
I play the DVDs on my computer, or in my DVD player.

I am interested in sound engineering/Music production, can i learn from home?

We Answered:

Studio production work is best learned in the studio, live production is best learned at a gig. There are basic principles that can be learned at home as a good starting point. The "Recording Studio Handbook" has always been a good source of practical material, hopefully it's been updated recently. Yamaha's "Sound Reinforcement" manual is considered the "bible" for live sound engineers. The "Audio Cyclopedia" is one of the best reference books on the planet.

What you can learn are things like the nature and physics of sound pressure and sound waves and how they behave. Basic electronics such as impedance and simple wiring configurations. The basis for most transducer types, moving coils, condensors, ribbons, etc. Phase and phase relationships. What a compressor is and what an expander is and how they affect sound quality. These are all things you can read about and learn. What you can't read about and learn is how to train your ears to pick out subtle nuances of a performance and then knowing how to improve them till your mix sounds perfect. You can read all you want about what an EQ is and how it behaves, but you still have to sit down and listen to a track and manipulate the EQ and see how it not only affects the individual track, but how it affects the overall mix as well even though you're only altering one instrument. I can tell you about feedback and how to avoid it, but you have to run monitors on a gig to really know how to ring out a monitor system so that it doesn't squeal in the middle of a performance.

You've probably been scouring the web since before you asked the question for material. See if you can find the books I mentioned without paying your life savings for them. Check out www.live-audio.com or www.prosoundweb.com (they are 2 ways in to the same place basically). There are forums there with professionals from all avenues of the arena there. Read a lot before you ask questions, search the archives, then formulate intelligent questions and continue learning.

Whats a good martial art to learn from home?

We Answered:

There's no such thing as a "good martial style to learn from home"....unless you count what ten year olds do by mimicking what they see on TV....copying moves from the Ninja Turtles and such.

Instructional videos and whatnot are meant to be supplemental aides to legitimate real-life training.....not a training tool in their own right.

I don't know what all this is about shaming yourself, and forgive me for saying this, but I think you should get over whatever happened and get over yourself and get on with it already.

If you're forever in self-doubt about something, than you'll never succeed in the tasks at hand.

Discuss It!
