Learn German In Germany

Constance Said:

should I learn to speak german before moving to germany?

We Answered:

If you're not starting to learn RIGHT NOW you wont do it in Germany anyway. I know lot of foreigner here in Germany and even after 20 years they have a terrible grammar.

German isn't an easy language if you look at the grammar so I really recommened you to take a look at it and start learning right away.

Sure you dont need to master the whole language before moving there. Still, it'd be much easier for you and people will appreciate it. Especially elder people dont know english so it's not like you can get along with english anywhere.

Also, the less english you use from the beginning, the more you learn. If you move to Germany having 0 knowledge of the language, you'd always keep trying to use english in a situation you dont know how else to solve. It's kinda risky, making you never seriously study German because "you dont have to" since you could use English.

How long does it take to learn German? while living in germany?

We Answered:

A friend of mine has done that, i think she was 16 or 17 when she went. when she came back, she could speak german well enough to have a conversation, and she understood basically everything that was said by her teachers since they are used to speaking clearly and a bit more slowly - among friends she sometimes asked for them to slow down a bit and then she could follow.
i noticed she didnt come back and was enormously confident in her skills - so i think you should not be disappointed when you dont feel like you have learned a lot, either. i think it is that your brain absorbs a lot of new things while you are there, and it is only normal that you will not feel ready to use that right away - it will take a little time to sink in. she had a year left of school and now she is at uni, studying a course that is partly held in german! now she finds that she has this foundation, or basic understanding of the language to rely on which gives her the 'feeling' for the language which will always enable her to convey her meaning even if not in the exact words that she means them.
she is proud to have done that and to get the feel for it is all you should expect yourself to do - you can always learn more words out of a dictionary when you get home.
have a great time there and dont set your expectations too high, as the most you learn will come by you not trying - my friend said she dared not say a word to anyone in the beginning, and often even later, and that it is normal to learn more by listening than trying to get a sentence out;)

Lawrence Said:

I want to learn German language in Germany ,any suggestions ?

We Answered:

Do you already know German or not? If not, contact the Goethe-Institut in Cairo and the German embassy. The embassy should know where you can take classes which prepare you for the necessary exams. Studying German in Egypt is a lot cheaper than in Germany - take advantage of that and get to know the basics before you go. (The German university in Cairo also is an option worth looking into. Don't know whether they have any language courses though.)

I also hope that you are already familar with http://www.daad.de - all the info you need.

Most universities in Germany also have very good programs that prepare you for TestDaF and other exams - the exams you need to pass in order to enroll as a student. The German embassy, the DAAD or the Akademisches Auslandsamt of the university you are interested in should have more information - on visa, finances, etc.

Feel free to email me for more advice.

Benjamin Said:

Going to Germany to learn German?

We Answered:

Your progress will be faster if visiting Germany because you will be forced to use it everyday. Germans do not speak pedagogic text, but often in dialect or really really fast.Learning slang words will not help you because slang changes every few months and why do you want to speak like a guttersnipe? Why not aim to speak properly? There is no really standard German, except for grammar learnt at schools.
I sometimes hit the language plateau, but since I speak it everyday, I learn new words. the trick is, just to keep oon learning and making an effort.
