what do greek speakers as a second language recommend to learn the language? We Answered:
learning Greek was compulsory at the school i attended. I'm also Turkish. at first i found it very difficult because the greek alphabet is like nothing i'd seen before, and English and Turkish have very similar alphabets. Once you wrap your head around the alphabet pronunciation comes naturally, lots of s's, t's and x's! Greek and Turkish share some similarities where words for certain things are identical in pronunciation, but knowing Turkish before learning Greek and vice versa won't help you learn any quicker or easier. I think a knowledge of Turkish would be a huge help n learning Cypriot Greek, which i heard for the fist time a few months ago. it's bizarre because it sounds like Greek and Turkish mushed together lolUsually, Greek words are spoken as they are written, however there are several combinations of letters that create different sounds, but there are so few of those that its quite easy once you've learned them.
However, reading and writing Greek is the easy part. Actually speaking, conversing etc is difficult. My main problem was vocabulary, there are just so many different combinations of words in the Greek language.
My advice to you is that you can practice your skills as much as you want for years, but to truly become proficient in Greek, or any language, is to immerse yourself in it by traveling to the country. i went on a tour of Greece with my school group for a month and simple things like asking for directions, ordering at a restaurant, shopping etc really improves your language skills. By the time i got back i was almost fluent.
A lot of Greeks are appreciative when they meet Turks who can speak Greek. There are so many that want to fight the stereotype of Greeks hating Turks, that they go out of their way to speak to you and be friendly. You do get a few racist Greeks who don't like you on principle, but the vast majority are lovely.
Sadly, most of the accepting Greeks are in greece. I have met hundreds of greeks (99% of the people i went to school with were greek) and am sad to report that most of them were extremely prejudiced, especially in our younger years where children arn't so guarded when repeating what their parents say ( the school catered from kindergarten to year 12) Little things like this one time in grade 5 i had my 10th birthday party and 2 girls weren't allowed to give me a gift because i was Turkish. and when we were 16 i hooked up with this guy and it went on until we finished school when we were 18 and i could never work out why he never wanted to date me even though it was so obvious that he liked me. He later admitted that his parents would never accept him having a Turkish girlfriend! Saying that going to that school thickened my skin would be an understatement.
But learning the language is great, and greece is a beautiful country with so much history. Knowing greek is a real asset if you're looking to travel to greece. I'm sorry of ive gone off an a tangent i'm just rambling now! But really, i highly recommend learnig greek and wish you luck!!

Which should I learn first: Greek language and history or Latin language and Roman history? We Answered:
I advise learning Latin first. even though Greek culture is older. In starting with Latin, you'll be working back from where you are now. More of our English vocabulary comes from Latin than from Greek, and we use the Roman alphabet. Once you've mastered some Latin, you'll be ablr to apply some of the concepts when you start Greek and are also learning a new alphabet. As for history, I think it's more important there to go in chronological order. If you attend a college that offers two semesters of ancient history, go for it! By the time you graduate, everything will have fallen into place.

Which language should i learn:Greek or Russian? We Answered:
greek is hard but it is a hell of alot more useful than russian, if your going to a university, then you will stand out more esp if your aiming for oxbridge cambridge/oxford) level but russian is perhaps easier and even if you dont like it try and convince yourself you do since if your not going to uni then dont waste your time learning greek. Greek does help with medical and law thought latin is also one to consider for that . hope i help :)
