Well, while I may not be as eloquent as "Semen Breath", he is correct for the most part.

"Real" Shaolin monks left the country at the onset of Communism, as much of it goes against their religious beliefs as far as dealing with the government. I know it sounds odd, but many genuine monks went west to areas of North and South America. The "monks" you see at the temples in China these days are great martial artists and acrobats, but they are actors sanctioned by the government to draw in revenue from tourists and the naive. In fact, in order to quell any potential uprising to the government that has been seen in much of China's rich history, Chairman Mao essentially made any true form of martial art illegal and created "Wushu", which is more acrobatic and artsy and tends to lack any actual application.

It further explains that Buddhism is of first and foremost importance to the order of Shaolin, with martial arts being a distant second.

hard work and brains will get you far. Obviously a good class will improve your technique, but you dont need much in class instruction before you can practice what you've learned.

Ed Hart, one of Bruce Lees first students, put in the work and that is how he got good at boxing, before he met Bruce. He literally just took a bunch of bricks, wrapped it in a sack, rolled some carpet around the outside, and used it as a punching bag. He figured if he could just hit really hard and really fast, then that was good enough.

My point is, that instead of looking for the perfect solution, get to work, do something, and if you find a good class someday, then great, if not, at least you practiced something and got better. If you dont have a bag to hit, use weights in your hands, and just do speed chain punches or something.

Other than that, youtube and dvds can help. Be sure to look into proper form, so you dont hurt your elbows, or hands.

and also, actually fighting should be your last choice because you can go to jail for beating people up. One guy in my circle of classes got jumped by 6 guys, he beat them all up, but went to jail, because one of those guys wasnt actually in the fight. He was just a random guy was standing too close to the fight. You never know what will happen.

Get one of those high quaity pepper sprays meant for self defense. It works better than hitting someone, and you get in less trouble for it.

Yea...same happened w/me and Tae Kwon Do lessons
see if you can ask for a female instructor if they have one...maybe you'll only be able to get private (and pricey) lessons

or you can learn from videos and friends who know Kung Fu

I just ended up not going cuz the stretches and exercises were very uncomfortable to do in front of others...even though it was just for the purpose of stretching...

you can post up fliers for female Kung Fu teachers to contact you...it might be cheaper b/c timing would be more flexible for them...and chances are they'd be college students or something

or look for a local woman's gym and see if they offer self defence classes
