Learn Spanish In Madrid

Cecil Said:

Anyone recommend a school to learn spanish in Madrid that doesn´t cost loads?

We Answered:

If you ask at the Town Hall, the Ayuntamiento, they normally run classes for foreigners at the Casa de Culturas. Very cheap quite intensive courses. I don't know about Madrid as it's a city so I presume there are several places this must take place.

Jeff Said:

How to learn fluent Spanish to go to school in Madrid?

We Answered:

Honey, you aren't going to be fluent enough to understand what's going on UNTIL YOU ARE LIVING THERE. It will probably take you about a month or two to get up to speed.

there are many ways you can augment your classes. Find some Spanish speakers to meet with once a week and exchange language practice. (there should be some in school, there who want to practice with you.)

find some penpals, some people online to chat with, people to use msn or skype with.

Nosayudamos.ning.com. Site to practice with natives.

Where should I learn Spanish? Barcelona or Madrid?

We Answered:

I´m from Spain, and both cities are worth to be seen, but you are an special case because you want to leanr Spanish.
In this case I reckon you should go to Madrid.
The reason is simple: Barcelona is located in Cataluña, there, people speak Catalán too. Spanish is the official language, but because of a region proud or something like that the Catalán is wide spread.
Barcelona people are very kind, but you will find a lot of people who wont answer you if you dont speak Catalán or just not treat you right.
I dont mean to rant about ppl from Cataluña but that´s the way it is...it has happened to me and im Spaniard.
Their Spanish is correct too, but they have a strong catalonian accent that yeap can be difficult
So you better stay in Madrid because there Spanish is the only language spoken.

p.s: a latinamerican spanish speaker can perfectly understand you if you get the Spain accent, it wont be a problem. They understand me perfectly, although is different accent is the same language :D

hope you have a nice stay :D and learn a lot!

Ben Said:

How can I learn spanish in Madrid?

We Answered:

My advice would be to use a phrasebook and pick up bits and pieces from that, but also learn some basic grammar like verb tenses. After you have learnt how to use the verbs to some extent and know some simple phrases you should just be able to pick up words and fit them into your knowledge, either by using a dictionary or hearing them spoken.

Myrtle Said:

Which is easier to learn Spanish, Madrid or Barcelona?

We Answered:

You go to Spain, you avoid speaking your native language, you'll learn Spanish.

If you go to Barcelona, you'll have the bonus of having lots of people around you who are also fluent in Catalán. If you wish to learn that, it will probably come quite naturally.

Madrid has the more pure accent.

Salamanca (also pure castellano accent) is where the oldest, most historic university is. Very good draw for many people.

Andalucía (lots of coast) will allow you to feel like you can UNDERSTAND anyone in the world whose native language is Spanish....it's the most difficult to understand, so it takes a little bit to accustom, but you'll have that added benefit of, when you meet anyone from the Spanish speaking world, you'll understand them.

Personally, I found Sevilla and Granada have a massive pull. The most beautiful cities I've ever been in, very dramatic and romantic, really warm people.

But then, the people in all parts of Spain where I have been have been terrific!

Edith Said:

When was the independence date of Madrid?

We Answered:

Independence from who? Madrid is the capital of Spain.

The kingdom of Spain has been around for a while, but the NY times almanac puts 1492 as the independence year. This was when Spanish Kingdom was unified.
