Learn To Play Bridge

Andre Said:

I would like to learn/play bridge locally, not online?

We Answered:

Check out the American Contract Bridge League's website listed below. You can find a bridge club in your area there. As for lessons on how to play, check out your local community college, as many of them offer basic bridge classes.

As for score sheets, the club will provide them for their duplicate games. If you're looking for tallies (score sheets for social bridge), your best bet is a game store, but I've also seen them at Hallmark.

Is Bridge an exciting card game to learn and play?

We Answered:

Well it is a matter of taste. Certainly, I share you preference of strategy in card play rather than the playing with money. However, I was disappointed with bridge when I tried it. I grew up on trick taking games such as whist or solo, where the emphasis is on playing out the hand - in bridge, the emphasis is clearly on the bidding system and the way it is used to convey information about players' hands.

It is not for nothing that people say that a good whist player may become a good bridge player but a good bridge player may always be a poor whist player.

Another problem that I had with bridge was that it seemed to reduce the social element for me, the focus on the bidding system had the effect of building in a kind of formality to the game.

A fair while ago now, I did discover an alternative that fit my social and strategic preferences. While I would urge you to give bridge a try - there are many, many players who enjoy it so much - I would also suggest the tarot family as an alternative (don't worry, most of the games are now played with French suited cards that you wouldn't recognize as tarot at all).

Where to learn to play bridge in Riverstown, Cork?

We Answered:

Most larger towns have lessons at their community centers, and sometimes at seniors facilities. If you cannot find lessons, you may be able to find a group that plays "kitchen bridge" who would be willing to accept a newbie and teach you how to play. That is how I initially learned.

And there are places you can go online to get started. Try here.

There are a few shocks install for you when you play bridge: (1) One player puts their hand on the table after the bidding is over - that hand is the dummy; (2) People who can play the game love to beat up on newcomers: my brother-in-law trounced me when I had my first game. I knew absolutely nothing about bridge at the time. Now (1) means that all players can see half the cards (their 13 cards and dummy's 13) so the contest is really to see who can take best advantage of that information and take that extra trick. And (2) was what impelled me to take lessons. I continued them once a week for two years. You will also need to play a second time during the week or you will forget what you have learned. I liked the experience of learning the game with a group of like-minded players. My wife-to-be learnt with me, but she didn't enjoy the competitive nature of the clubs. She no longer plays, but I had got my head kicked in enough playing rugby football to sort of enjoy the masochistic nature of the game. If you cannot get to a bridge teacher in person, you can learn online from the BIL club http://www.bilbridge.com/ You can download Bridge Baron from http://www.greatgameproducts.com/ (my favorite software) You can play online against 3 computers: http://www.arkadium.com/ (a new site with ads)
