There's a book about one of Napoleon's early fiancees, who went on to marry a marshall of his, Jean-Baptiste Bernadotte. Bernadotte was offered the crown of Sweden, and she became Queen of Sweden. It's in the form of the girl's journal, and is much-loved by many. "Desiree" by Annemarie Selinko is based on true events, but fictionalised. A great read!

There are a number of historians about who write fact in a very readable and interesting way, and have become very popular. One of these is Alison Weir. She writes mainly about the Tudor period, and has written about Henry VIII and his wives and children. I'd really recommend you try these - you might be pleasantly surprised! (She gives a lot of personal information that you don't find in drier histories, which brings the subject to life brilliantly.)

Reading books is a great way to learn another language. The best thing you can do is get books that really interest you, because then you'll want to keep reading them. Find books that are at a level that challenges you a little bit--but not too much. Children's books are probably a good starting place (they are easier to understand and use smaller words). If you say what kind of stories you like, I can give you some specific recommendations.

Like someone else said, watching movies is another good way. If you can, watch without the subtitles on. Movies are good because they give you a lot of context clues, so you can get most of what's going on even without understanding every last little word. Sometimes movies are easier to follow than real spoken language. I lived in a Spanish-speaking country for a while and when I was first there, I was pretty lost--and then we went to a movie and I could follow everything that went on, without subtitles or anything. It was a pretty nice ego booster, which I needed at that time. :)

Another way to look at your question is, if you're travelling in a very large, strange city would it be better to have a map of the city, or ask for directions every time you need them?

Undoubtedly, consulting people is a lot more fun and interesting, but the map would be a lot more reliable, and you would quickly learn many things from themap that the people you are consulting with don't know. If you can't find something on the map, you can always consult the locals. In the same manner, you can always ask a question on Yahoo answers.

There is NO down side.
They will learn all the knowledge available when they read themselves while being thoroughly entertained- all of this in a way that will stick in the mind, as opposed to the flashing images of tv that leave glimpses but no depth.
