try watching alot of american news/shows and repeat what they say. the more you listen and watch people of whatever language speak/act...the easier it will be to learn the language/culture.

I was a bit worried with my daughter as she was surrounded by French speakers except for myself who spoke only English with her. I was a stay-at-home mom so she was certainly exposed to English quite a bit but her first words were in French and that was hard for me to accept! Besides mama and papa, she didnt speak until 13 or 14mths when the words started tumbling out. She now knows about 100 words, each in both French and English, at 22mths of age which to me is very impressive. Babies/toddlers are truly sponges, so as long as your daughter is getting 30% of her time in English than it will be a 'mother' language. If it's less than that, it might be a passive language, meaning she'll understand but not speak it, but the moment she's immersed in an English speaking world (say at daycare/school) she'll catch up with the other kids.

Some of your other answers are just silly!!I work full-time too, and I speak to my daughter quite often in the mornings, evenings, and week-ends. And this is the PERFECT time for your baby to learn a second language. She doesnt have to think at all, she's just absorbing and processing. It's a great gift we are giving our children, and your daughter can carry on a bit more of her heritage by knowing Kmer. You wouldnt want to wait until your child is older, as they will gradually lose the capacity to hear different sounds. This starts at just 8 or 9mths of age!! Don't worry about a thing. You might notice a slight 'delay' in her speaking for the first few months in comparison to her pears, but if she's like my daughter she'll catch up and pass them as she has been exposed to multiple languages. She's even picking up Spanish now from watching Dora!

Because America does not have an official language, your ancestors did not learn English the day they stepped of the boat, give them time, they will realize English is necessary to earn money and the will learn it. But remember the USA does NOT have an official language.
