Learn To Write

Troy Said:

What do you call it when you learn to write by copying other writers books?

We Answered:

I don't know if there's an actual name for it or anything, but it's learning through repetition.

What is the best way for an adult to learn to write English?

We Answered:

As an ESL teacher of immigrants, I would make the following suggestions. Start small, learn how to fill in simple forms, write "pretend" postcards to her family, write "invitations" for all sorts of social events. Have her write down a short conversation she listens to. You have stated that you are not writing a novel, you just want her to pass the immigration test, so go online and see if you can find a website with practice immigration questions and work on those. Most of all don't panic and don't make a big deal out of it because she is already insecure. The more she writes the more she will get it eventually. As with anything, there are no magic bullets, no shortcuts, only practice. One more thing, and maybe I'm stating the obvious, but have you looked into any free community English classes offered by churches or volunteer organizations and perhaps that would be a good avenue for her. Good luck to both of you and keep trying.

How do I learn to write in pretty, cursive handwriting?

We Answered:

Begin with ruled paper. Make "o"s. You're trying to make them even and identical.

Frequently, people try to write a line on each ruled line. This is incorrect. Cursive script has what are called "addendums" and "dedendums." These are the tall and dangling parts of letters such as lower the case "d," "f," "g," "h," "k," "l," "p," "q," "t," and "y." Leave a line both above and below each written line to accomodate these features.

It also makes a difference what TYPE of pen you use. True cursive writing uses a FLAT nib, called a "calligraphy" pen. With this type of pen you should only pull the pen across the paper or slide it sideways. Making an "8" should be done by drawing the top, then bottom "o" by making two parenthesis strokes "(" and ")" together.

Lastly, SLOW DOWN. People tend to try to write as fast as possible in order to get through the "drudgery" of handwriting (read: "homework"). Handwriting is also something of a joke to be endured in our culture, the medical doctor's illegible handwriting being the standard jest. The thinking apparently is that if your handwriting is also illegible then you must be smart as well. And an individual, since nowhere is individuality more pronounced than in one's handwriting.

Well, I'm an individual too, just like everyone else. But I can get better.

Practice, practice, and practice some more writing clearly ALL the time, even in things like grocery and "to do" lists. Make your letters as even and regular as you can. After a while you'll begin to see the difference, and how you can improve even more.

After this light comes on in your head there'll be no stopping you, and after a while others will marvel at how clear your messages are, usually coupled with a sigh that their own handwriting is so poor. That's when you can secretly bask in the warmth of knowledge that at least in this way you have made yourself a superior person.

How can you learn to write computer code?

We Answered:

You don't learn "coding", you learn programming. Then you learn the syntax of the language you're going to use. (Which language you use depends on what the program needs.) Then you design the program and code it. Just learning the coding part (or learning a computer language) without the rest won't help you to write programs, it'll let you hack at it until you get frustrated enough to give it up in disgust.

The best book I've ever found for learning programming is http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/0… It doesn't teach you a computer language, it teaches you programming. In English.
