I need ideas for an introductory class for kids learning English as a second language?

We Answered:

Hi!
I guess that you re-posted the question because you were not satisfied with the answers given before. I gave you the idea of giving them the reasons why English is important, which is great for ESL learners(it is a class that I give each year in different ways)...but if you do not like it and you prefer to start straight with the activities then you can start off with this:
One of the most important things when initiating classes is to get to know each other..So, you can do some activities in this two hour period to help them not only get to know each other, but practice their English as well and it can be an icebreaker activity as well.
First Activity: Every student presents himself and says one adjective that describes him/her then, the student in back of this one, repeats the classmates name and adjective and so on....like a chain, the last student gets to mention all of them...you as a teacher, must participate as well.
Second Activity: You divide the group, in pairs...you pair all of them with a classmate/partner. You tell them that they must draw their partner, (you explain them that it can be something simple, just to have fun and share) and write ten sentences describing this person physically and what are their likes and so on.
Third Activity: Each pair presents to the group, they show their pictures and they read their lines.
Good luck! I hope you liked this idea, which I use when I tutor students in summer.

Which games would be best for 1-2 kids learning English?

We Answered:

Most of the cards in Sneeze do not require reading. The cards that do require reading are pretty simple - for example, "WINDY DAY. Change the direction of the wind and draw an "AND NOW" card.

The cards in History's Mysteries have "flavor text" that is not needed for game play. The words on the cards that are necessary for game play are "Fact," "Fiction," and the name of the card (The Loch Ness Monster, Bigfoot, etc.).

The Settlers of Catan is mostly language-free, but the development cards require some (not a lot of) reading. It's a great game, but the drawbacks are: only 3-4 players (a separate expansion is required for 5-6 players), and it's for older kids (maybe for a fairly bright 8-9 year old, but otherwise 10 and up).
