Try RFI.fr with radio and some exercises for foreigners. Or visit lepointdufle.net I used it to learn Spanish on my own and I can communicate without any problem. You will find loads of useful things and tips on this site.

Yeah learning French is tough! But its actually not too hard to learn french online fast. I've discovered various audio courses which greatly help learn the language. Its a bit tricky to figure out which french course is right for you though.

In my opinion you want one which has a visual component. I think you are right about grammar - you definitely want to learn some, rather than just focusing 100% on learning conversational French. I tried Pimsleur but I didn't like it for exactly that reason - not enough emphasis on grammar.
