Children used to play outdoors. They played hide and seek, jumped rope, played hop scotch, baseball and any other number of activities. They learned about interacting with other children, about fairness and good sportsmanship and the rules of give and take. They got sunshine, exercise and good clean air. On a rainy day, they played board games indoors. These taught important lessons too, such as how to play fair and take turns, abilites that all of us need to master if we are to become proper citizens in today's world.

Many children also learned to play musical instruments which helped their minds to develop in areas of logic and mathematics. It also gave them a sense of added accomplishment and good self esteem. Now, they had rather take karate lessons.

These days children sit at computers or on the sofa playing video games. They learn about tunnel vision, how to tune out the outside world and instead how to concentrate on and become adept at violence and killing, even if it is only a game. They perceive violence as exciting and fail to develop a proper perspective on the value of human life. This is reflected in the way teenagers now drive and otherwise entertain themselves.

There is now less family interaction. Everyone is doing their own thing instead of doing something together as a family. Many children get their value systems and worldviews from cartoons such as Southpark where nothing is sacred rather than from their fathers and mothers.

Sorry, these statements come only a result of my personal observations rather than from any solid studies, but perhaps they will help you.
